Attaching Photos to SMS Android Messenger

Ok...Nexus 5X user and I've been using Android Messages vice Hangouts as my primary SMS ap. In the past, when I hit the + (Attach) sign, I was able to add pics to SMS's. Now, all I get are these bloody insipidly worthless stickers that pop up. Am I missing something here? How come I can no longer attach pics/photos. And how, in God's name do I get rid of these gawdawful stickers???

Open the Android Messages app .
Open or start a conversation.
Tap Attach .
Tap Take picture .
The camera display shows near the bottom of the screen. To take a picture, tap Done . To see the camera in full-screen view, tap Full screen . ...
To send your photo or video, tap Send .
