Hey, I have been trying to wipe my old tab 2 before recycling it, and I can't remember the passcode. Here's what I have tried so far:

  • Recovery (Odin) mode - Just said it was downloading for hours, didn't actually do anything
  • Samsung Smart Switch - Too old to be supported
  • Samsung Kies - See below
Any help with this would be great, thank you!

Welcome to Android Central.

Given the age of the device, is it not possible to boot into Recovery and perform the reset from there, without need for the password?

I could be wrong since I’m not familiar with Samsung devices.

You're not going to be able to access the tab via a USB if the device is locked. So any attempt at this connection is going to fail. The device has to be unlocked to change the USB status to data transfer, which might also include enabling USB debugging, which can only be done from the system settings menu. Given all of this It is highly unlikely that you will have any success without the passcode.

Way back in the day users who forgot their log in could use their Gmail and account password to unlock the device, but updated protocols may have changed this.

I looked it up and Samsung devices Android 4.4 or older, will allow the use of Gmail and password to recover device. Anything newer than that, 5.0+, brick or lock up the device without proper unlock credentials. See the answer here.
