Audio book files being deleted from Smart AudioBooks app

Both my husband and I have this audio book player on our phones, mine is an S9+, his an S8. Both run Android 9. On his phone, the audio books we have copied and pasted to this app keep being deleted. Mine works with no problem. I have asked the app developer, Alexander Kravchenko, and we've narrowed it down to another app on my husband's phone deleting unnecessary files. But how do I find the app causing it? I've checked all the permissions etc, and he doesn't use a cleaning app. I thought it might be linked to software updates, but the app works fine on my phone and I've had similar updates. Any ideas out there?

Welcome to Android Central! I moved this from the Android Apps forum to the General Help forum since the former is intended for developers to promote their apps.

What directory on your husband's phone are the books going to? I they're going to the /Download directory, then use a file manager app to move them to some other directory like /Books or /Media. If his phone has some "phone cleaner" function or app turned on, it might be periodically clearing out the /Download directory.

Any resolution? I have a Pixel 4a 5g and I'm experiencing the same thing.
