Aug 15...Is OTA Froyo unrootable?

Easy..

First off, download titanium backup from the market and backup all your apps and data! Then, run unrevoked forever on your phone assuming you are already rooted.

Now,...to downgrade back to 2.1 build then follow this link. Download the 1.47.651.1 Ruu. That will be what you use to get your phone back to the state it was when you bought it.

Next, do the official 2.2 OTA by going to update HTC software on your phone. Now, Because I had used unrevoked forever, after you update to 2.2 you can easily get root access again by first putting a custom recovery on your phone. I used clockwork mod recovery. All you have to do is place the PC36IMG on your SDcard (google search or search on xda-forums "clockwork mod recovery PC36IMG", or PM me I can send it to you). Turn off phone. Boot into recovery by holding the down arrow and pressing power. Then choose to update. It's easy.

Now that you have a custom recovery on your phone again, all you need now is superuser access. The easy way is to email the superuser apk to your google email and just open and download on your phone. If you can't do this, go to xda forums and download the new superuser 2.3.1 update.zip. Put this on your SD card (be sure to delete the PC36IMG file you just used). Turn off phone. Now boot back into recovery again by pressing down and power. This time go to recovery. Pick, install update.zip from SD card and confirm.

Now, you're good. Reboot phone and you are on official 2.2 Froyo which is also rooted. Go to the market, install Titanium Backup and then restore all your apps and app data from titanium! PM me if you have any questions.

I thought everyone has said doing this (downgrading from 2.2) is impossible. Can anyone verify this works for those people who are starting with an unrooted 2.2?

Unrevoked forever only works if you are already rooted and it doesn't sound like he is.

THERE IS NO WAY TO ROOT 2.2 AS OF TODAY BE PATIENT.

Use the search function dude..

Someone close this spam please.

You can't downgrade unrooted 2.2

Maybe I'm missing something, but why wouldn't these instructions allow you to downgrade?

Just pick the RUU you want to downgrade to, right? Then you can do a full root and flash a 2.2 ROM.

I've personally used these instructions (and it's a huge PITA) to undo unrevoked and then use simple root. My understanding is that I could pick whatever RUU I wanted and that would put me back to that point. Otherwise why would the older RUU's still be available to download?

Once you get full root don't accept any OTA updates.

The older ruus are there for people who have not updated to 2.2 ota.

They are there for root users to revert back to 2.1 stock so it can be rooted again if you ran into major problems or need to get your phone fixed etc. The 2.1 ruu will not downgrade from stock 2.2.

If you don't believe me try it. Nothing bad will happen it just wont work.

I'm rooted so I'm not gonna try it. I was just hoping for a more technical answer I guess. I thought that using HTC sync to do the RUU wiped the phone so my logic said that you should be able to use it to go back to 2.1. If not oh well I was just trying to help.

I tried it, but got a bootloader version error:(
It says I need to get the correct RUU.
Time for a beer:p

Will that RUU only work properly if you're rooted? Which one are you using?

GENERALLY when you do RUU it will restore your phone to complete bone stock form, the way it came from HTC. It's recommended for people that want to unroot their phone, so you don't have to be rooted to RUU.

But as was stated above there is some debate as to whether or not you can down grade to 2.1 from 2.2 using RUU. It might be pointless to keep trying unless some of the heavyweights on here (d3, toasted, gbhil, beezy) can shed some light on the subject.

1. As of 8/17/2010 you cannot CANNOT root a HTC EVO running android 2.2 (FROYO)
2. You CANNOT downgrade from android 2.2 (FROYO) to andorid 2.1 (ECLAIR).

That should address all questions, Any questions about RUU's please post in that respective thread.
