Auto Brightness: Low light grainy screen

Ok I did a search and didn't come up with much.

I'm loving the phone but one thing that has been bothering me is that when I have auto-brightness on and it dims the display if I am in a dark room, the screen gets grainy. I also see a little bit of horizontal and vertical banding at times.

It almost makes things look like they were printed on low quality paper or on a cotton sheet.

I did some searching on google. Is it true that this is just a common drawback of amoled screens? Do I just need to turn off auto-brightness and keep it above 50%?

From reading the XDA forum and all the posts about the GSM model, slight issues like that are common with SAMOLED screens. Seemingly only affects the display when the brightness is really low like that.

Mine doesn't seem to have this issue that badly. I have to really look hard to see the vertical areas that are darker/tinted, when I drop the brightness way down, AND look at it from a steep angle.

i don't have a galaxy nexus but i do have a nexus s, which also has a amoled display, and when the display is gray and at a lower brightness i can see vertical lines but it's not that bad.

i did play with a galaxy nexus at a verizon wireless store tonight and i didn't notice much difference but the phone was at full brightness. i should have tried it out at 25% brightness, which it what i normally have it at on my nexus s.

Thanks all for the heads up on the auto brightness being an issue when set. I came from the Rezound and that screen is amazing and right away I noticed on white web pages the look of old paper/cotton. After setting the screen to 75% it goes away. Will I always be stuck with either auto dim and ugly whites or less battery life and whiter whites? Is there a software fix possible?
