Auto sync off email refreshing

Hello. First time android user.

I have my auto sync turned off because the only thing I want syncing is my yahoo email. I do not pay yahoo for pop3, but when I had auto sync on, I would recieve my email updates. Right now I have it set to update once and hour, but I am not getting them unless I manually refresh, which I have set to refresh when opened. Is this how it is supposed to work or am I doing something wrong?
