Automatically switching from WIFI to 3G when connection is lost

Hello,

When I am at home and lose the wifi connection on my router (the wired connections still works, just the wireless part goes down) I would like for my phone to automatically switch to 3G, but it does not and was wondering if this was a bug or a limitation of my phone which is a Nexus S 4G (Running JB 4.1.1) or something else entirely? I just want to clarify that when I leave the house and go out of wireless range, it does automatically switch over, but if I stay within wireless range and the wifi connection is lost, it does not. Is there anything I can do to make it work like it does when I get out of wifi range or do I just have to deal with it ?

If you lose the connection between the modem and the wireless router, but the router is still broadcasting you will lose all data connections because Android prioritizes wifi and as long as it can still see the router it turns off the 3G data. If the router goes down it will look like it is out of range to the phone and 3G data will take over just like when you leave the house.

So the answer is "nothing I can do about it" ? The reason I ask is because my old phone (Optimus S) used to do what the Nexus S refuses to do so I thought it would be possible to force the behavior I am looking for since I am rooted. Is this a hardware thing then ?

Well no, not really a hardware issue or a problem. Think about it. Android will use wifi whenever possible. You want that. The problem is when a wifi connection remains even though no data is coming through because of a problem before the router. I recently discovered this when I was traveling. Since I knew a bad modem was involved I turned off wifi until the modem got replaced.

That is not to say there is no 3rd party app to address the issue. I just am not familiar with any and I actually want the phone to work the way it was intended.

My issue is that I received a notification that urged me to enable auto switching between wifi and 3g but since doing so my home wifi has not been connecting I just get a message saying it's been disabled due to slow connection - but the signal strength is very strong. Can anyone help as this is eating up all my data!!
