Away text message stopped working

I have been using an away test message program which has been great until recently. Now it has stopped working entirely. I rebooted, erased and reinstalled, and even got another program for the same function, but nothing. I use Handcent as my regual app for this and cannot figure out why I can't get it to auto respond anymore. Anyone have any thoughts on this issue?
