Back to iPhone 4s

@OP "zeteo"

You do have to keep in mind when you come into an Android forum full of dedicated Android enthusiasts and make some of the judgments and comments against Android you will get a load of "hate mail" sorta speak. Same could be said for someone going into an iPhone forum and only giving it a few days/weeks to prove itself then making comments against it and following up by saying how much you love/support another OS/platform.

To be fair coming from a different platform "Apple/Blackberry/Windows, etc" to another and only giving a device a 3 week chance to prove itself and give a fair opinion of the OS its based on is not a very big time window. Android just like any OS has its goods and bads.

Just some things to consider, I know when I switched from BB to Android I missed a few things and stuff was difficult for the first few weeks but I kept an open mind and hit these very forums for help and here I am today a happy Android user :)

Just so its known some comments were removed to cleanup from a previous insult being made.

We have zero tolerance when it comes personal insults that go beyond being playful. We welcome people of all age (above 13 yrs old), race & skill level here at AC and don't expect to have members told they are too old or other crude comments.

Don't forget many of these "older" members are in fact those who paved the way to bring us to where we are today :)

Back to the discussion.. Have a good day.

As an old broad, I thank you! :)

The OP may have been referring to MMS messages over wi-fi, which the Galaxy S III does not allow. From my conversations with Samsung support, Samsung designed the phone not to allow MMS over wi-fi.

On my HTC EVO - SMS & MMS over wi-fi all the time.
On my HTC EVO 3D - SMS & MMS over wi-fi all the time.
On my Samsung Galaxy S III - SMS only over wi-fi.

I sent and received a mms on wifi before

I have nothing against the iPhone. If that is what works for you then go for it. I prefer the phone to be mine not Steve Jobs/Apple's meaning I want what I want on the phone and the Android platform gives me much more of that than iOS. I am a bit more technical that the normal user (IT Development Manager) but if you look out on the internet you can normally find the answers to most of your problems.

Many complaints about WiFi dropping. Mine did initially until I found the post pointing to a web site showing how to turn off WiFi Power Save. Samsung has it turned on by default. I never noticed any issues but did notice it re-connecting fairly frequently. Once I applied the fix, I have not noticed the problem when WiFi is in range. The method to turn off WiFi Power Save is at the end of this post.

I have had zero dropped calls with my SIII and have had it over a month. The same could not have been said of my BB Torch. The signal strength does not always show it to be strong but the SIII still holds the call and I do not have great signal many of the places I go (Home and Work).

Some say cheap others say lightweight. I actually support the iPhone 4S at work and hate the extra heft the device but that is a personal preference. In the month I have been on mine I don't recall getting a single malicious "Spam" notification. I mean some Free apps put some ads out on Notifications but if that bothers you then purchase the paid version.

As many have said here: the phone is a tool not a religious artifact to be worshiped and the amount of near religious fervor discussions is often really annoying.

Anyway enough typing. Here is the WiFi Power Save fix:

1. Open up the Galaxy S3 phone dialer
2. Then dial *#0011#
3. Look for the “ServiceMode” screen and press the left menu button
4. Select “WiFi”
5. You should see that the “WiFi Power Save Mode” button is “ON” – now put it on “OFF”
6. Your done! Just exit the menu, switch off your WiFi, then switch it back on again. If your router details are saved and automatically connects, get your Galaxy S3 to forget or delete the network information. Then reconnect, putting in all the required information.

I will pick up another G3 today! I really did like the phone, and the radio was my main complaint. Thanks! :)

You just told everyone you know nothing about iOS and certainly nothing about the different versions. Also that you are most likely a teenage boy.
You will find a lot of people with poor vision prefer the smaller retina display and its very sharp text over something like a G 3 with bigger screen but blurrier text.
This is the kind of silliness all too prevalent among Android users who are obsessed with iPhones. You must be very insecure in your choice of Android.

IOS better be flawless its been on 5 generations of phones ans is still the same. Some little tweaks here and there but that's about it. A boring os that would run slow that would just be an embarrassment. Apple has a lot on their plate. Ios 6 is a make it or break scenario in my opinion. U will never see me with an iPhone. IPhones will end up being grandmas and grandpa's phone...oh wait no that's impossible screen is too small for the hard of seeing. They're screwed. Lol

Every once in a while a comment comes along that has to be read multiple time to be sure the commenter really said what you thought they said. For instance, "You will find a lot of people with poor vision prefer the smaller retina display..." You can't be serious, people with poor vision prefer a smaller display? I've heard a lot of silly defenses for the iPhone but that takes the cake.

Oh, and the snark about being a teenage boy was pretty classy too.

The difference is the S3 has 20 pixels per inch less than the iPhone 4S. Trust me, people with poor eyesight will much more prefer the S3 with it's 4.8" screen at 306ppi over the iPhone 4S's 3.5" screen with 326ppi.

It will be even better on the GS4 with 355ppi.

My usual data usage is less than 200 mb a month, with the G3 I used 2.5 gigs in under a month due to the fact it wouldn't stay connected to my wifi. I am disabled and seldom get out.

Have you tried this solution?

1. Open up the Galaxy S3 phone dialer
2. Then dial *#0011#
3. Look for the ?ServiceMode? screen and press the left menu button
4. Select ?WiFi?
5. You should see that the ?WiFi Power Save Mode? button is ?ON? ? now put it on ?OFF?
6. Your done! Just exit the menu, switch off your WiFi, then switch it back on again. If your router details are saved and automatically connects, get your Galaxy S3 to forget or delete the network information. Then reconnect, putting in all the required information.

Immediately after reading that post yesterday I went to BB and Verizon. I don,t normally use Vzw but thought I would try them. No luck neither had any memory cards. Based on the list of complaints on the Vzw forum I think it is just as well. Later this morning I will go to my AT&T store and pick one up in the Garnet red.

My question is what might this do to battery life? I would think you would have worse battery life.

I remember my HTC inspire had a wifi option for high performance WiFi, but it killed my battery life.

Personally I have not noticed anything out of the ordinary in battery consumption. My battery life seems to be much more dependent on how much I am using the phone. I was concerned but if the OP biggest concern is keeping connected to WiFi and not hitting his data plan then this fix will certainly help that in my experience. In the battery stats my screen show generally 45-50% every day I am normally using the phone quite a bit and it has always lasted the entire day.

Now a couple of people have taken their GS3 back and gotten replacements that hold WiFi much better. Since the OP has already returned his original GS3 then maybe the issue is not a problem any longer.

gkamer's post from a few weeks ago was the one that clued me into this solution and it resolved the issue I was seeing (bouncing back and forth between WiFi and the data plan). His problem was that he really had bad cell coverage where he lived so when it dropped WiFi he lost network connectivity. I know that would annoy me more than just data plan usage...

I got my new garnet Galaxy S III today! It is almost set up! I have had NONE of the issues I had with the first one. It is like a totally different device!! It is like night and day. With all the spam I was receiving I can't help thinking someone may have used it before me/

Thanks all!
