Back to S7

I've been using Samsung 4 four years. On 12/28 I got my pixel XL. I would have been a note 7 user if not for the fiasco. I was going to do the s7e myself but went with the pixel. The issue I have with Sammy is that they allow too much carrier interference and extremely long wait times on updates. My note 4 that I had for two years had only two major updates, which for me, is unacceptable. Not to mention the last update for my note 4 nearly made the phone unusable. I like Samsung when the product works but waiting 6 to 7 months for an update to fix what the last update broke is not worth it. I hope you enjoy your phone and you have a better experience than I did.
Minor note here. Pixle phones will only get 2 major updates as well. That's what Google is willing to commit to not more. So this Pixel generation will get Android O and P. Security patches is a different story.

I have both phones. Both are good, but for me, I like how S7 Edge looks and feels in the hand. I don't use any cases. So that's why I like S7 Edge more.

The Google Assistant is the main reason it beats out my S7E. I use it many times a day and it only will get better. The other reasons for not sticking with S7E is the slow OS updates, progressive UI lag, and curved screen phantom touches. The Note 7 was a great update to the S7E but we all knew what happened there.

But you have Google assistant on your S7E or any android phone. Its just hitting an extra button. Hell, I've been using Google assistant since day 1 with both my S7 edge and axon 7. Its funny because my wife laughs when we're home and I say "ok Google" and all 3 phones light up. I don't understand why you and thousands more dont get it.

Having owned both, I don't understand why the S7 Edge is as popular as it is. IMO, the S7 Edge has different qualities than the Pixel. That does not make it better. It just means it fits you. That's why every company doesn't make the same phone.

I'm a little surprised with the video comment though, I tested mine back to back and never saw anything like that. I don't have the Edge anymore however to look into it again. Typically if I took a noisy video with the Pixel, it was also noisy with the Edge. I don't typically use phones for video though, there are cheaper and far better devices for that.

The S7 edge is so popular BC it has everything a flagship device can have. Good battery life, SD card slot, super AMOLED display, IP68 water resistance.

I still have both devices and did a side by side video using both devices, the difference in video quality is so far apart that I can't bring myself to use the pixel as my daily driver now. I take a lot of videos with my phone and they do not look good on the pixel. It is unacceptable to me for a $650 device to have such poor video hardware. What is a cheaper and far better device to use for videos?

Try doing it across the room when I am getting ready in the morning and asking questions/directions/music in the car where one button press is oh so not convenient. How about when I have my phone in my pocket and ask it a question. Yes, I do use it truly hands free. As I stated in my earlier thread, that is not the only reason but a main one.

Eh, I still had to charge my Edge most days before I hooked it up for the night. SD card slot was nice with my 256gb card from the Note 7 days, but I always preferred fast internal storage on one partition. Water resistance was nice, but never anything I needed to actually make use of. It has different things that I don't necessarily need. Overall, I found the phone to be an annoyance. I was excited to get rid of it and the Pixel XL with 128gb fits me pretty good.

As far as the videos, many modern cameras take better pictures and videos believe it or not. Not phones, but actual cameras.

With that said, I'd still have a Note 7 if I could. That phone was far better than the Edge. Even the Pixel XL seems to have a much larger screen due to how the edge was applied. The size (even if perceived) was a big deal to me too.

Not sure who really relies on carrying a point and shoot camera around nowadays when the technology is all on our mobile devices. I absolutely love the Pixel and wish the video quality was better for such a high priced device.

I agree with you on battery life with the S7 edge. That's why I said "good" and not great! The pixel battery life is great and that's also a very important thing for me. The S7 edge doesn't last all day for me while the pixel does. I am stuck between a rock and a hard place

Me and the wife do. Just like audiophiles don't typically rely on audio from a phone to earbuds. Nuforce HDP and HD650's say wut.

I can understand that. I am a big proponent of no "best single phone." The worst feeling after the Note 7 was recalled was wondering what to go with next. I didn't want anything else. I wanted the 5.7" screen and the 64 internal storage and my 256gb card as well as the revised software which just puts the Edge's to shame. Sammy really did have a killer phone on their hands. I just so happened to really fall for the Pixel. I can't complain about any facet of the phone, even after using Sammy's best, which wasn't the Edge.

I'm trying to figure out if I want to trade battery life for video quality and visa versa

That's why they make custom roms. ;) It will keep the pixel relevant for a long time. There are even happy Galaxy Nexus (pre-nexus 4) users still, running the latest android. The pixel will easily be running android 10 and beyond thanks to the hard work of the people in the modding/development community.

For techy folks like you yes, thats an option. Google ditched Nexus for Pixel to target the regular consumer. These folks are the masses and will only be getting 2 major upgrades, just the same as what Samsung does with its flagship phones. Albeit, you will get them a lot faster on ur pixle.

I've had the S7E, S7, Note 7 and now the Pixel. Yes, you get more value in the samsung phones with more features. The sammys beat out the pixel and every other phone in the segment because they offer such a good overall package.

However, I've got 3 reasons why the pixel is a better fit for me and for a lot of other people. First, the horrendous "samsung tax" (lag) is a huge detractor from the user experience. I put up with it for 2 years (had an S6E before), but once you get the pixel and its fluidity, you can't go back. Second, the still camera of the Pixel is better than the Sammy in full auto. Can't speak to the video quality or selfie quality, but rear main still camera is better. Third, the modern samsung phones are fragile and I hated the glass back and curved back. Never felt right in the hand and you drop it once and it's toast. The pixel is slightly better built, at least it feels more secure in my hands.

But all you have to do is say the magic words "ok Google" and your Android will come to life. No matter what room you're in as long as it can hear you. Just voice train it. What don't you understand? Thats all I do. Whether I've got my pixel, S7edge, or axon7. They're all voice trained to wake and obey my commands without me lifting a finger. You've got to learn how to use your phone and set it up properly. In all honesty, there's nothing that pixrl can do that my other 2 cannot.

Put nova launcher on, problem solved.

And what can the S7 edge and axon do that my pixel cannot ? What software do they have that I'm missing out on?

Nothing, a couple of people are just hunting for these threads and trolling. It's kinda sad and detracting from the discussion.

OP, glad you got something that works for you. Are you planning on checking out the S8 or planning to stick with the edge for a bit?

I have no doubt what you say is true but it still beats waiting 6 months after the update release and service provider interference.

I guess nothing :).

I was debating whether to get the S7 or the Pixel to replace my 4 yr old device. While I still believe the S7 offers more features for the price, I ended up going to the Pixel because I wanted a bloat free, smooth android experience with timely updates. For me, waterproof is nice to have but I rather have a phone that is made of metal (or mostly of) than a glass back phone. I feel I am more likely to drop my phone than splash it with water. I've had phones beginning dating as far back as the Nokia walkie talkie looking phones and never got one wet! (knock on wood)

I am content with the experience the google pixel gives me and that is well worth the price to me. This is the great thing about competition, everyone is free to choose what best suits them.
