Back-up and restore question

Forgive me if this is stupid and I'm missing something obvious, but how does a Rom Manager backup or a Titanium app backup work if the data isn't saved to an SD card? Wouldn't the backup be lost every time you wiped and flashed a new rom since the info isn't saved on anything external?

What's the obvious work around that I'm missing here?

Data IS saved at the point you make the backup. It basically freezes everything on your phone

Even though you don't have a removable SDCARD you still have an "internal sdcard/storage" location that acts the same. When you wipe and flash a ROM it only wipes and flashes the /system/ area of the device and not the internal storage.

If you plug your phone into your pc and open up the file explorer window, you'll see a directory on your phone called TitaniumBackup and clockworkmod (assuming you have installed these apps). That's where your junk is stored.

If done in recovery via CWM, yes, it will survive. If you do a factory reset through the phones Settings menu (Settings>Backup & reset>factory reset), you will loose everything.

I deleted my titanium backup folder and all data in it.
I then reinstalled TB and did a backup.
Now in windows on my pc the TB folder is blank.

Thoughts?
