Background usage limits

Hi there, just trying to get some information/understanding into this. Coming from Samsung S9+, I vaguely recall that by default, apps would be automatically put to "sleep" if they hadn't been used for 3 days.

Obviously a few things have changed since the S9+ android system - the equivalent setting appears to be called "Background usage limits" within "Device care - Battery" setting, and "Put unused apps to sleep" appears to be toggled on by default.

My query is what exactly does "Put unused apps to sleep" achieve here? I've had the phone for a few weeks now and each of the 3 categories below this have 0 apps in them. These 3 categories are "Sleeping apps", "Deep sleeping apps", and "Never sleeping apps". This makes me wonder if the default automatic "sleeping" mechanisms actually do anything? Or perhaps the duration that apps are put automatically to sleep is longer than 3 days by default now? Strange that there is no longer a setting to change this if so.

If you have adaptive battery toggle on you will see apps put to sleep when not in use to prevent using background and eating battery . Usually put to sleep or deep sleep you would have to open them to get notification again , while never sleeping apps is if you don't want them ever to be put to sleep u add apps there you want .

Yes, I have "adaptive battery" toggled on, but no apps have been automatically put to sleep yet. I'm thinking there must be some time frame of no use before apps are automatically put to sleep. Perhaps it's 28 days?

Should be around 3 days , maybe 5 but after a week or 2 you should start seeing them placed there unless you keep opening them up

Yes this is the point I'm trying to make - I'm pretty sure I've had a few apps that I haven't opened for >3-days, and yet they haven't been put to sleep. My "App issue history" is essentially empty.

You can try resetting device care by going to settings>apps>device care then tap >go storage and clear data and force stop.

Other then that I'm not sure anything else can be done .

Thanks for trying to help. Yes I've tried doing that clearing data some days/weeks ago, and still no apps shifted to sleeping etc. I noticed this behaviour prior to doing a complete factory reset too.

Unless there's some actual software bug with specifically my phone (which is doubtful?), I'll assume that this "automatic" process of putting unused apps to sleep must be >3-5 days.

EDIT: does restarting the phone affect this process? That is, does restarting the phone put these apps out of sleep?

Yeah I would also assume 3 to 5 days also , I can give one more suggestion might work or not but sometimes going in safe mode the back out fixes glitches , worth a try . Your Welcome !

No matter what I do my S21 Ultra keep 95% of my apps in a deep sleep with no notifications when my screen is off :(

Adding apps to "Never sleeping apps" does nothing at all.

This Android Doze crap really sucks.

Strange , have you tried reset device care ?

Sounds like you've installed something that may be doing this? That's literally the opposite of what I'm noticing. Also, it's a pity no one else is replying in this thread to report their observations. If possible and if people had time, I'd appreciate what people notice with the apparent automatic process of placing apps into "Sleeping apps" category - do they notice it occurring after 3 days, 5 days or longer?

EDIT: note that I'm having no issues with battery life (it's probably the best battery life I've noticed in a smartphone), but I'm just curious what is "meant" to happen with this automatic sleeping apps process.

It’s very difficult to test how many days it takes for an app to go to sleep, unless someone is willing to run tests for the OP.

What is more relevant is that there are none in the list so something is clearly wrong. With hundreds of apps, if deep sleep is working, you are bound to have many apps in various states of sleep.

It has to be a setting that is wrong (maybe something in dev options?) or an app that is doing this.

In developer options (which I always enable within hours of getting a new phone mostly to minimise the animation stuff), I note the setting "Standby apps". Some information on that is here:
https://www.gadgetsnow.com/how-to/h...-android-smartphones/articleshow/70659532.cms

I haven't changed anything from default there. I'm noticing several apps are on the "Rare" setting (generally apps that I don't use much). I wonder how this setting differs from "Background usage limits" as described above?

It seems like there are at least 3 settings that do something different to try to regulate how active apps are allowed to be:
1. "Put unused apps to sleep" (which appears to be associated with the sleep categories I mentioned above). This setting is buried within Device care > Battery > Background usage limits (this is the topic of my OP)
2. "Adaptive battery". This setting is buried within Device care > Battery > More battery settings
3. "Standby apps". This setting is hidden within Developer options > Standby apps

Does anyone know the differences between these three? For those that are noticing apps being put automatically to sleep or deep sleep, have you got developer options enabled?

1. Adaptive Care is an AI feature built into Android which helps learn usage habits of various apps. So you can think of this setting as a means to collect battery usage data from various apps.

2. Now the OS has learnt and continuously learning from adaptive battery setting, what should it do?

3. This is where "Put apps to sleep setting comes in". Basically you can use this option to put certain apps to sleep etc based on that data that's learnt. This setting is more of an action that OS can perform based on the battery metrics.

4. As far as developer options, I never bother to change any settings. Been a few years since I bothered to change anything there other than enable USB debugging or OEM unlock if I have to flash.

At least that's what my understanding. I do have adaptive battery and put apps sleep setting both turned on. And I have no issues with battery etc. I have also not actively kept track of what apps are being put to sleep etc since that's something that never affected me in terms of battery or any app usage. So don't have much input there unfortunately.

Thanks for the post.

Just to check and perhaps get some idea:
-About how long have you had the phone for (since last factory reset etc)?
-How many apps do you currently have in the "Sleeping apps" or "Deep sleeping apps" category that you haven't manually put there?

I have had my phone from launch day (forgot how many days lol - think few weeks now). I have never factory reset after setting up my phone initially. Have around 100 apps installed. I only saw 1 app (Maps) in the deep sleeping app and sleeping app section. I also see 4 apps in the never sleep section (don't recall me putting them there)

I have 6 sleeping apps, 48 deep sleeping apps and 6 never sleeping apps.

I have had my phone for about 6 weeks I think.
