OK So I have a customers Galaxy Note GT-N8010 which appears to have a battery issue. When on charge using the official charger the percentage charge decreases rather than rises!!!
I want to send it off to get a new battery installed but need to ensure it is fully backed up first.
I have tried installing Kies on a PC and backing it up locally but as soon as I unplug it from the charger it overloads the USB port and is not recognised by Windows. I tried charging overnight whilst turned off and it got to 68% and halted but was enough to connect it to the PC and for the driver to install. However before I could back it up it discharged and overloaded the USB Bus and now Windows will not recognise it at all. I have tried un-installing and reinstalling Kies and various other tips found online but to no effect.
I need to factory restore it before sending it for repair but don't want to lose the customers data. It appears to be backing up to her Google and Samsung accounts (but the latter only appears to be the wallpaper!!!). I also read unless there is a micro SD installed, pictures are not automatically backed up. She has no SD card and all her photos are on internal storage.
In addition Dropbox is also configured but I cant make out what if anything is backing up to Dropbox.

Can anyone tell me where the data is backed up to on the Google Servers? It doesn't appear to be the same as Apple iCloud in that you can go to one place. Does the backup go to Google Drive or spread across various Google cloud applications is it hidden.

Is there anyway I can ensure the device is backed up before I do a factory reset?
Many thanks

With the phone turned off? (If it's turned on, look for a rogue app first. What goes into the battery is the charge current MINUS any current being used by the phone. A bad SD card can cause a "charging" battery to discharge because of the tremendous current the tight looping causes.

You're making a lot of unfounded assumptions. Photos are, c9ontacts only are if they've been entered as Google contacts.

Not where you can get to them - that's private between the server and the device.

No, it's put where the device can restore from if needed - not in any place you can get a name to.

Only to an SD card or to a computer if you can keep the connection going long enough. BTW it's not overloading the USB port, it's disconnecting, probably due to an internal problem in the phone. The customer should have kept backups all along, so you shouldn't have to back anything up - if she didn't, she'll learn something.

Firstly Rukbat thanks for the very quick reply.
The device is actually a 10.1 tablet rather than a phone but that probably makes little difference.
As far as discharge goes then yes it does discharge when switched on. It does charge when switched off but never reaches 100% charge.
The device does not have a micro SD card installed so its not a faulty card causing the issue. As you say it may be a rogue app but I have used Application Manager to kill most apps (there are dozens of games installed) but it doesn't seem to make any difference to the discharge rate.
If I got a micros SD card does Android come with a file manger to copy and paste between folders or do I have to download one?
Also Is there an app that allows you to backup to a network over wifi?
Unfortunately when dealing with customers, them learning a lesson in not backing up is not an approach I can take. I need to ensure that her data is backed up before I do a factory reset.
Is there somewhere you can choose what to back up to Google? In the backup and reset section thjere is a tick against Back Up My Data and Automatic Restore. When I click on the Google account Tab and click Sync all at the top it starts to sync and then tells me it last synced at todays date and time.
Incidentally the info I found about not backing up Photos unless there was an SD card installed I found on the US T-Mobile site here which says under Media and Pictures "Note You must have an SD installed"

You may be correct that the device backup is caused by an internal issue with the tablet, but I know from experience that if the battery is too far discharged it overloads the USB bus and I get an error in the PC device manager of "Urecognised device" "USB descriptor cannot be read". As soon as i got enough charge into the device it was recognised by Windows 10 and the driver installed and Kies could access the internal memory. However I cannot get the device recognised at all now.
thanks
