Bad memories brought on with the 4 buttons

Why did moto go this route? Does any one recall the blackberry storm 1? Well I do and it cheapend the phone. Phil already mention they have some wiggle in them. So how long will buttons last? How much jean lint will be built into the cracks? How much light leak? And will the buttons rub away with use?

Yea, I had this same concern, however I would like to make a strong point to defend the four buttons. Though not the ideal set up, the physical buttons were the only part of my Storm1's hardware that was still good after a year of use. The screen and even the lock button were already jamming up after only a short time. Also, most lint buildup was around the screen. There was some light leakage, but that's because it wasn't a well built phone.

It may shore up bad memories, but I think sometimes having at least some physical feedback is important in a smartphone (for example, if the touch screen freezes up). I personally don't think it's a reason not to by the phone. Though it does make it look a little less high tech than some of the other phones. But in the end, it may prove to have better function over form, and that's all I really care about.

Physical buttons break over time, get stuck from dust and liquids getting into the button crevasses, but most importantly, wouldn't it cause hand fatigue?

I use the standard buttons on a capacitive touch setup and would imagine that physical buttons would cause some stress to the hands.

I kind of like the idea of the physical buttons as the touch ones are just too sensitive and I'm always randomly hitting the search button or one of the others. Durability is a concern though.

Most importantly is hand fatigue? Is this serious?? You would have to have some seriously weak hands to worry about hand fatigue with a couple of buttons??? This just doesn't make any sense at all sorry...

Hey from personal experience using the Blackberry, my hand muscles tensed up, especially since you're holding the phone in somewhat of an awkward "pinched" manner. This is a known fact about people getting repetitive stress disorder.

I play guitar, so my hands are pretty strong and I'm also pretty sensitive about getting carpal tunnel.

Build quality of the latest Moto devices are superior to RIM devices. I would not worry about it. And use a case, at least a pouch case when putting the device in your pocket.

I also have a storm 1, and when the screen randomly stops functioning, the "hard" buttons are the only thing that lets me still use the phone while I wait for the screen functionality to come back.
...and to those worrying about the longevity of the buttons, do you also worry about the keys on your desktop keyboard wearing out? I wouldn't worry about it. You're overanalyzing it.

im looking forward to the physical buttons. i absolutely hate the buttons on my droid. i hit them to much on accident, and if the phone did lockup on you the buttons would be useless. unlike most i never had issues with my storm1 buttons. i had issues with the screen and slow os

And I plan on using a pouch when I pocket it too just to avoid lint and crap.

NOt that it makes it common, but the Ally has send/end keys, in addition to the big four. So does the G1, now that I think about it. Not sure about others.

When I had the Droid, it drove me absolutely nuts how easy it was to push any of the capacitive buttons by mistake. I am very pleased they choose hardware buttons for the X.

+1. I have the Droid and feel exactly the same. I miss physical buttons. I don't care about the aesthetics of the phone nearly as much as the functionality. And for me, physical button are more reliable --> functional.
