Barnes & Noble Nook App now in market

For those who have Barnes & Noble accounts, Barnes & Noble finally released their Android eReader app ("Nook for Android"). 17 MB(!!!)

Time will tell if it's a memory or battery hog, but right out of the box my first impression is that it seems pretty nice looking. Main criticism is there's no white text on black screen option, which is easier on the eyes. I have a Nook ereader as well so now I can read my books wherever I am.

Did B&N just decide to port the whole damn skin they used for the Nook into the market? Yikes.
Am curious what books they have that the Kindle doesn't, though.

The size is ridiculous. I assume it's installed on my SD card, so I'm not that worried about it, but I'm going to keep an eye on the memory use.

None, really, as far as I'm aware. Amazon has a better selection of books, magazines and newspapers in their Kindle store. But the main appeal of the Nook, to me, at least, was that it reads standard format ePub ebooks (rather than a proprietary format, like Kindle). So I can borrow ebooks (free) from my public library, or buy them from different sources online.

Not sure if those other books (library book and purchases outside B&N) can be downloaded to my phone using this app, though.

If you are on 2.1 it is not installed on SD.

I would have to disagree as far as books go (don't read magazines or newspapers) I have never once not found a book on B&N that was offered on Amazon. I'm sure there are a few out there both ways, but B&N has a great selection. I also chose the Nook over the Kindle due to the fact that it supports epub and I can borrow from my library.

Has anyone figured out how to sync the last page read on your nook with your device and vice versa. It would be a major pain to have to remember where I left off. I've tried adding a bookmark before I close one device but I can't tell how those sync either. I got one bookmark to show up for one book but not for a different book

Other than that all I can say is FINALLY! I've been waiting for this app for a while

I don't think you can sync where you left off with your Nook. I've hit the sync button and that didn't do a thing for me, so if there is some way to do that I'd also be interested in knowing. It will probably involve a firmware update to the Nook before we can do that.

is there a price difference between BN and Amazons e books?

Also, interesting concept about the library books, which is new on me, do you actually "return " these?

I believe the library books have a "self-destruct" code that makes them only usable for a set period of time.

I found no real difference in price between Amazon and B&N. I have found that about half the books I currently own aren't available electronically. This rained a bit on my parade during the first two weeks of owning my Nook. I thought about returning it since it didn't seem like I was their target audience. But I found enough books to justify keeping it.

And now with this app, all that is left if to figure out how to tether my Nook to my Droid.

D'oh, yes I'm an idiot for forgetting that all apps are stored to internal memory. Luckily for now I'm not in any danger of running out of space on my DInc.

On the Barnes & Noble message boards, their admin posted that they are working on fixes like (1) installing it to SD card and making it smaller; (2) syncing with Nook (apparently it already syncs to PC and iPad) and (3) allowing sideloading of non B&N purchases (on the SD card, I would hope).

Still a pretty good start. I find it hard to be too critical, two months ago I was using a BB Curve 8330 waiting, oh 2 minutes for a simple web page to come up, so I'm pretty much in awe of everything my new phone does.

This application is enormous - with no ability to do A2SD on my Aria, this will be gone as soon as I'm reading my book. For it's size, this application should have a vast selection of customization features - it has virtually none. No night reading mode, no color selection, no way to get rid of the hokey animated page turns...

You're mostly right, but you CAN get rid of the hokey animated page turns...though personally I like them And it's not a fail to everyone. I think it's a great first start. With the improvements they've said will be coming it will be fantastic in the end.

How did you get rid of the page turns? The only options I can find are either turn or slide - both are slowish and irritating.

I'm pretty unimpressed when an application is released from one of the leaders in ebooks that is huge in size compared to, say, FBReader (at 800k) yet it can't do simple things like change font and background colors. These apps from Amazon and B&N should be hands down the way to read on these devices. For me they are apps to be suffered through to get access to the small amount of DRM'ed media I have for them.

I've been reading ebooks for about 8 years, since I owned a greyscale sony clie (the clie reader could invert screen colors ). These eReader apps from amazon and B&N seem to be trying to add fluff rather than good function.

I hope you are right, and future releases of the Nook app are better - it's not likely I'll be downloading it
