Basic Questions about Rooting

Hi, I hope you're well.

My girlfriend just go the LG Optimus T today and I'd like to help her root it. I have some very basic questions I hope others can help me with:
1) Is there a chance that rooting the phone will brick/destroy/break it?

2) I'm planning to follow the instructions posted in the first post of this thread. Is there a better or more updated set of instructions somewhere?

3) What do I do have rooting the phone? My goal is the ability to install games and apps for free on the phone.

4) What's "ROM?" How is it different from root? I'm rather confused here and am trying to read up on it.

Rooting can brick your phone and does void your warranty. There are literally thousands of games and apps at android market that are free and don't require root access.
