Battery after GB Update

a couple days on GB and its been very volatile.

the first day after the update the battery drained very fast.

now a few days later, battery life is AMAZING! Full day and still at 70 percent where it would normally be at 50. I am not sure if its because I used it less on that particular day but its pretty awesome.

I went ahead and did a factory reset and it cleared away my sync issue. I've been on it constantly since because I've been re-setting it back up and re-installing my apps, but I can still see improvement in battery life.

I had the same issues everyone else is having. In fact the first day i used GB, the battery died in about 5 hours. All I had was a 30 minute conversation and normal usage beyond that. Very unhappy and frustrated since this problem continued on Thursday. I got all night starting at 10pm to about 430 before my phone went completely dead and I did NOTHING on it other than some texts and a 45 sec phone call. Not to mention, my phone was in night mode from 10PM to 5am. So I was not very happy.

However, Im happy to report that my battery life has improved today. The reason isnt because I just waited. Im sure that will help with the usage issue if this truely is a "smart OS" and can change and adjust power usage as it goes.

The reason is because I was fooling around with widgets and I accidentally clicked on the "power settings" Android Widget. You know the long box that has the 5 options for bluetooth, gps, wifi, night mode and media synch? Turns out that my media synch was tuned on!!! Now the reason I did notice this at first is because I use the motorola blur individual switches instead of the android ones and I didnt have a media synch blur switch set up.

I turned it off and now Im doing great. My meter looks to be about 50%, and Ive been on the battery for about 10 hours. So Im a happy camper now.

I remember reading in this thread or another forum(heaven forbid!!!!) that someone kept seeing that his media synch was on and he was killing it with ATK, but it kept turning back on. Im no Android OS expert, but could this be because while ATK kills the task, if the switch is still on, it will just turn back on? Try the media synch switch in power settings. Ive now done away with the individual moto switches and use the full bar in its place. I get 5 switches for the room of 4 moto switches and I like the dark color better.

Anyway, I just wanted to pass this along to people who were having issues with battery life. Its something to check on and see if thats your problem. It has worked great for me. And I was ready to go back to VErizon and have them give me a new one, or restore Froyo. Neither of which I wanted because GB looks great and is super silky smooth. I couldnt be happier now. Well, if the battery life keeps improving, I will be.:D

Ooh, I wonder if the media sync really kills battery that much. I've always had mine on (even before Gingerbread). I'll try turning it off for a few days and see if the battery improves.

If I do this then wont I have to manually retrieve data for tweetdark etc?

I think I answered my own question. My tweetdark just gave me a notification with the sync button deactivated ...

Honestly bro, I dont know. Im not familiar with tweetdark or its innerworkings. Guess I could look it up, but I hope you have figured it out. I still wouldnt know how it works with media synch. I use tweetcast, but i only have it update when I start the app or click the refresh button. I follow too many people on twitter to be notified every time someone tweets.

Im honestly not even sure how media synch would even interact with a twitter client

EDIT. Upon rereading your question, my guess would be yes, you are going to have to ask your twitter client to get new tweets. If you are talking about your client retrieving tweet updates.

But if it saves you battery life... I have no problem missing some tweets from people. If you are a twitter fiend, you may have to figure something else out.

Give it a shot man. You dont have anything to lose. I could have just found the switch right when my battery would be turning around regardless of the switch being on. I just put my X on the charger about 15 minutes ago. I got aprox 13 hours on the charge and my screen says charging 30%. Which is much better than the first day. Very minimal usage today. My phone and screen both used 29% of my power when I looked. It was a light day of usage for me.

Probably would have made it the whole day if I wasnt going out tonight.

Looking decent so far. Still get twitter client updates. No email push though. The real test will be at work tomorrow as it works to maintain a 3g signal.

Yea, I'll check it out. Gotta see if I get email updates with it shut off though.

My battery life is amazing on the official Gingerbread, even better than
595 and when I had Rubix installed on my phone months ago. For example, my phone has been unplugged 22 hours and I'm still at 80%. I have other tweaks applied like Imoseyon, Autokiller Memory, Sysctl in addition to my phone being underclocked. I'm using the same battery that came with my phone when the X was released last year.

I've messed with all of the battery settings i can. I've also been religious on killing any unnecessary apps that are running

Killing apps is not a good way to save battery life. Turning off wifi and phone service aka plane mode could help for when you are in poor service area. Do a search on task killers, you will see with android it its not a helpful thing.

Once I stopped playing with the new build so much, I noticed that I got a serious increase in my battery life. On froyo, I was getting about 14 hours out of a battery charge; on gingerbread, I'm getting just over a day out of my battery charge now.

I think I have something to try regarding gmail sync...

For it to check for mail the autosync button needs to be on
... that might be a battery drain. So, what I did was add my gmail acct under the email app and set the fetch schedule to 15 minutes.

No constant connection and I still get email without having to manually fetch it...

Fingers crossed.

Hmmm. This sucks. My email stopped coming in and you were right mumfoau, it stops my email from coming in. Hopefully my battery has fixed itself or Ill be going back to VZW with this. I turned the synch back on.

Yes it does stop but if you set up your gmail in the email app then you can get your mail based on the fetch schedule as opposed to the automatic push that the gmail app does.

The battery status thing is useless now because it shows me being on battery for 2 mins when i know it's been over 2 hours. It seems to always be wrong like that of late. I'm using gauge battery widget. Any suggestions for others that might off that functionality?

Yesterday I let the phone go until the battery was completely dead and the x shut off. Im going to see how many hours I get before it shuts off again. I normally NEVER let my battery get that low.

Alright so Im getting better battery life now. I got most of the whole day yesterday before I had to go on charge and I used Win amp for a good hour and a half. 8am-830pm or there abouts. It is def getting better.

So there is some light at the end of the tunnel. Im almost a week into having GB and my battery is def lasting longer. So hopefully you have seen some light at the end of the tunnel as well
