Every time I turn my phone on I get that pop up message that I should ensure the back is on all the way. Is this just a courteous reminder or is there something wrong with my cover and it is actually not on all the way?

Side question: I also get the message that I should make sure the battery cover is closed every time I unplug my phone from the charger (makes sense), however, I don't get that message if I just open the cover and leave it that way. Am I supposed to?

The message is to ensure that you have the charging port covered. In case you were to use it in water, they want to make sure that yours is closed, which is why you get it after charging.
The back lid should be an easy seal though. Do you see any gaps?

When I first got my phone, there was a check box displayed in the message, to get rid of that message.

do you see that?

It happens every time you turn the phone on, that's normal. It doesn't have a sensor or something that "knows" when the cover is not on. LOL.

Wow I'm stupid. I actually thought there was a sensor somewhere. I swear I heard that but I guess I imagined it lol.

LOL, nah you're not stupid. The way the message pops up, it would lead one to believe it has a sensor. It's like how you get the charge port cover message after you unplug it from the charger. It doesn't actually know if you just open the charge port cover, it just displays the message when you pull the power cord.

I still hear some saying there's a box you tick to tell it not to prompt anymore but I need someone to prove it.
Sounds like urban legend at this point as no galaxy s4 active owner has figured it out. They got these messages a year before any s5 owners did Lol

This has wound up people, but there might be that one time that it does this and the cover wasn't on

I get that whenever I restart my phone. It's normal... nothing to be concerned about. Samsung did that as just a reminder.
