Battery Draining Quick

I've been keeping an eye on this thread since it started to see what all could be leading to my subpar battery life. The thin I am noticing this morning after unplugging the phone is that the battery went from 100% to 90% in under 20 minutes. This doesn't seem that correct unless once the battery drops below exactly 100% to anywhere between 90% and 99% the battery indicates it has a 90% charge. Is that the case or might I have a real battery problem here?

Yeah its the 2nd case. Its in 10%increments. 90-99 counts as 90% charge.

But I also accidentally forgot to charge my phone last night and woke up with 15% charge from about 80% before I went to bed... I wonder what app has gone rogue.

well thanks for the info on that. at the moment I seem to be losing 10% an hour with all my major power eaters turned off. Do you think maybe I should do a reset and run just the stock apps to see if it's a battery issue? I should also mention that I've cycled the battery about 8 times including last nights charge.

I am totally new to the smart phone world, but I've been building my own desktop computers since 1998. A lot of the same rules apply. Background software/apps will kill performance and battery life. I was a little concerned about how long the first battery charge lasted, but after disabling some of the obviously unnecessary apps, I'm really impressed with the battery. Since I'm new at this, can anyone give me a list of only the absolutely essential Atrix apps, so I know which other ones I can disable. Thanks

ya started using my phone this morning around 7 am est it is not around 2pm and I am at 15% charge this drains really quick and I am not even doing heavy use. probably under 1 hour worth of phone time and checking emails throughout the day.

used juicedefender but doesn't really help.

anyone else noticing such bad battery life.

Started the day, 7am at 70%, 3pm back on charger at 2%

Question to folks experiencing similar issue though, when you reach the point, what does your Battery manager say for "Cell Standby"?

I am at times in a bad reception area, and if the phone is losing signal and constantly trying to connect back, it can cause a BIG drain on the battery.

Just wondering if people experiencing this issue (like me) can check that?

Be careful of the widgets you use. I installed executive assistant on my phone left it over night and my battery dropped 20% when it normally never drops at night. I also had the settings at manually refresh, but clearly that didn't help.

@ 5% battery (11h 3m 7s since unplugged)

Display - 65% (Brightness set to Automatic) (Time on: 3h 26m 55s)
Phone idle - 18% (Time on: 7h 36m 11s)
Cell standby - 10% (Time on: 11h 3m 7s)
Android System - 9% (CPU Total: 15m 23s, CPU foreground: 30s)

Most use today was text messaging, with some Angry Birds and Words With Friends in there, and a little TweetDeck use. Not rooted or anything like that.

**Is "overcharging" this phone a problem? I just charged it tonight and the battery is at 100%, but I want to keep it on the charger until the morning so it's at 100% to start my day.

@ 5% battery (14h 22m 49s since unplugged)

Display 61% (brightness set to lowest setting)
Android System 19%
Phone idle 11%
Wifi 9%
Cell Standby 7%

-streamed over 9 hrs of music on tune in radio and
-medium browsing
-20 texts
-mild facebook and twitter usage
-some angry birds
-downloaded a few apps

I am considering a factory reset, but want to give it a few more days with full cycle charge. I am content with current battery life, however wondering if I could squeeze any more juice out of it by doing the reset.

Starting to think the Angry Birds playing is the culprit. I've done the same stuff on my phone today minus Angry Birds, and I'm at 50% battery. Usually at this point I'm at or around 15%. Not really sure how long I was playing it for yesterday, maybe a total of a half an hour from 830a-4p. It shouldn't really be that intensive of a program though, is it?

Juice Defender, I got 16hrs of use yesterday before I put it on the charger last night.

i just got my Motorola keyboard yesterday. this is my first bluetooth device for a phone ever so i decided to test it. i left both keyboard and phone connected thought the night. i am a bit surprised by the results because i keep hearing people saying that bluetooth is a MAJOR battery drain. my phone has been on for 14:30 hours right now with 1 hour of screen use and it is still at 30%. bluetooth is at 7% usage, phone idle at 47%, display at 28%, cell standby at 19%, and voice calls at 2% with a minute phone call.

i had to test this because when i'm the computer, i'll have the phone on the desk on the dock and use the keyboard to check stuff on the phone quickly. it will be a bit annoying having to turn the keyboard power and the phone's bluetooth on and off every time i have to check something.

I think the bluetooth keyboards turn themselves off after 15 minutes of no use. So while the bluetooth radio might still be on, it's not actively sending a signal back and forth. Also, unless your bluetooth was on discoverable the whole time, I don't think it should eat that much battery.

So, I might be getting a FREE spare OEM battery.

My wifes captivate battery shat the bed last week and I've noticed lately that my up time has decreased dramatically over the past 4-5 days (I think we may have a bad charger in the house causing issues). I went in to pick up her new battery tonight (free of charge) and while I was there I mentioned that mine doesn't last as long now (used to get 16-18 hr and now get 10). They are shipping my battery to the house and I'm hoping they don't ask for the old one as they didn't ask for my wifes old battery either.

fingers crossed!!!

Battery issues

I switched from an IPhone 4 to the Atrix and I am really impressed by the device. HOWEVER, I was very close to return the phone due to poor battery life (in comparison the IPhone 4). The max I got out of the device was 14-16 hrs and the strange thing was that it did not make ANY difference whether I hardly used the phone at all or played around most of the time. Over the weekend I checked and after unplugging the phone from the charger and leaving it on the desk the battery was down to 70%.
By the end of the day on my IPhone I used to have about 30% battery left with all radios (3g, bluetooth, wifi, GPS) on and moderate use. With similar use and GPS off the Atrix hardly made it through the day. I read several suggestions and wanted to share how I increased battery life by almost 100%!! Like mentioned earlier I was puzzled that even in idle status there was a 10-15% drain. The only logic explanation was that there are services that continue in the background and drain the battery.

1. I think the absolute biggest battery drain is to enable wifi triangulation for location services. The fact that the pop-up window states "...Collection will occur even when no applications are running." should have made my suspicious. I have noticed that enabling the GPS does not have any significant effect on battery life as long as you do not have any applications open that use that radio (like maps). Obviously I disable the wifi option in location services.

2. Root your phone and download Titanium Backup PRO. Disable all Motoblur services. I do not use any Motoblur widget/services (no facebook, twitter and so on) and am happy with the native gmail client. I literally froze allmost all of the motoblur services as well as other services that may use data services in the background (news, weather services).
Following link gives a good overviw which services can be disabled without any problems:
Death-Force • Thema anzeigen - [TIP][Tutorial] Freeze Motoblur for more Performance and RAM

3. I haven't really found it helpful to use setcpu. Whats the point of having a ferrari and driving it at 30 mph?

Since making those changes I have seen a significant increase in battery life. Using the gmail client, bluetooth+GPS+wifi+3g on, screen set to auto-brightness and mdoerate use throughout the day I make it easily throughout the day with the battery indicator showing in general 30-40%. I think step 1 made the biggest difference. Again, this phone is just amazing and I do not miss my IPhone at all!
