Battery horrible

Right now I have 63% and I have 23 hours an 5 mins since charging. I have used twitter, wifi when I was at home, gmail and regular mail. Downloaded apps from the market and played with a few other things like google maps and gps. Oh and for the past 8 hours I am roaming at work since sprint can't make it into my office in a metal building.

um, yeah, i'm not calling you a liar, but i think your numbers are off! you have well over half your battery life left and you are roaming and you've had the phone on for 23 hours already? not a chance in hell.

also, the question was, how much display time has been used????? you're going to tell me 3 hours right?

Hmm... I can only wish...

I keep data off during the day while I am at work. I have a desktop that takes care of all my needs except text messaging. I will try and do a screen shot this week.

Yes, keeping data off during the day will certainly preserve battery life. That is simply not an option for me. However, compared to my Pre minus, my MoPho kicks butt in the battery department. I can *almost* make it through the day on a single charge with moderate use. I've simply learned to keep some kind of charger by my side. :) I think I may just order a spare battery for quick swaps.

Well, for some reason my battery has made a dramatic improvement. I did turn off background data and I'm not sure if that was the culprit but yesterday I got 24 hours of battery life! Just over 4 hours of screentime, that was huge. I was on wifi most of the day with a couple hours of 3g also.

With background data off though, i didn't get my email pushed very consistently - so that could be a problem.

Yes, background data is a battery drain but is needed if you want your email pushed consistently. You must weigh what is more important to you.

May I make a recommendation?

Buy a spare battery with a spare battery dock. Carrying around a second battery for my Nexus S 4G has been great. I can easily get 25-35 hours because I can rely on two batteries. I never have to worry about turning off background data or lowering the screen brightness. Plus that tiny pocket above your regular pocket on jeans are made for a battery, perfect size.

My battery life and responsiveness have gotten worse. I guess I should inventory what apps I've added, and see what I can remove. One that might be an issue is Beautiful Widgets 4x1 weather. I wouldn't think it would be a big drain, since it's only suppose to update every couple of hours, but I gather it has a reputation. I like it, though, and might keep it even if it is slowing stuff down.

Other stuff:

netflix (haven't used)
folder organizer
jewels (probably too recent to count)
pure grid calendar widget. Hmmm, this might be the culprit, and I don't seem to be using it
flight aware
QR droid private (haven't used)
Evernote (haven't used)
OI file manager
Motorola media sync
fast web installer
app brain
a couple of calculators

I've found a spare battery for sale, but not a battery dock. If I can't charge the spare battery separately, I don't think it does me much good. Hoping that these peripherals (and perhaps a larger battery) come out soon.

Sprint has (or at least had last time I checked) a spare OEM battery with a charger for $49.99. Check out the online sprint store.

I also use a Zaggsparc that will allow 4 charges to a cell phone. I can't honestly say if this is true or not but I have used it quite a bit.

I know one day isn't something to brag about, but my battery life on my MotoPhoto was outstanding today. If I could say, I would actually say it was 12 times better than my previous phone (Optimus S). I spent from 5 in the afternoon to 11:27 p.m. texting my mom, my co-worker, downloading apps, surfing the web, playing music, and using the facebook apps and I was at 80% battery life left. This is what I consider extreme usage (I only really use my phone for texting and music in the gym). Very happy with my phone as of now.

Battery life for me was really good until the latest update. It’s horrible now. Looking at the battery monitor, Android System seems to be the culprit as it’s “awake” much of the time. This was never a factor before. Can I go back to the previous firmware?

Still haven't plugged my phone in since yesterday, and I'm at 50% now. I might suggest you seeing if you have a defective model. Also, there's a slight glitch in the system. When you plug it up to charge, and the light turns green to show it's done, unplug, then re-plug it back in. This phone has something weird where 100% is not 100%. You'll see it if you do it. Might be a reason why your draining so fast because your not getting a REAL full charge.

battery got bad for me after update too - and it's a very common problem apparently.

If you have widgetlocker installed on your device, remove it. That is one of the fixes going around right now. It helped me.

im also having battery problems after the current update, i used to be able to go all day long listening to pandora, texting, checking emails, and alot of phone usage, but today my battery was down to 40% just after listening to pandora for about a 2 hrs, without many phone calls, and few texts. it seems like the update caused the battery to drain faster then ever.

Yes, WidgetLocker seems to be the most common culprit (it was for me), but there are others. I've heard someone who did not have WL installed fix their battery problems by uninstalling GetJar, so it's not WL-specific. It seems the latest update does cause some instability with a select number of apps, causing them to run processes in the background that don't show up as originating with the app. Instead, it seems to force the phone to stay awake or wake constantly.

If you are experiencing horrible battery life after the update (draining from full to dead in 4-5 hours or less) and your battery is always hot, first try disabling WidgetLocker. If you are not running WL, start disabling/uninstalling apps one at a time (or in groups of five or so) and see if you witness any improvement. Be sure to let the developers of whatever app you find to be the culprit know so they can begin looking for a fix on their end.

Alternately, you can do a full factory reset, but I'd save that as a last resort unless you have an easy way to restore all your data (rooted with TiBackup, etc.)
