Battery Life for a newb

So I have to be doing something drastically wrong.

First, I come from being a blackberry nerd, my phone would last days.

I went ahead got my first Note 3, I loaded some games, apps, and made sure everything was closed. First test.... Battery lasted 5 hours and was insanely hot.

Next step, I put it on power saving mode, checked (I rooted), to see what else might be open, then downloaded on a full charge about 1GB. Battery went to 80%. Then did not do much except listen to a few mp3's walked 30 blocks in NYC got to a bar, listened to some music, went got some pizza. By the time I came home (4 hours), the batter was 5%....

I don't have to be a genius but something is definitely wrong. I just did a factory reset and I really do not want to keep my phone plugged in over night. However, what are my options? I know I am new so anything helps :-) Thanks!

If you installed a sd card and loaded it up with a lot of gbs check your battery in settings and see if indexing is top of your list. It will eat your battery fast. Once sd is indexed it will settle out and battery life will return to normal.
Also, I think there is a lot of stuff syncing upon setting phone up first time with all your accounts.

Just kept it on overnight, decided to test it with some weird game called Temple Run Oz. Played it for 45 minutes battery was down to 75%

I now opened up battery lists:

Screen 64%
TEmpleRunOz 15%
Viber 5%
android system 4%
Android OS 4%
Cell Standby 3%
Whatsapp3%

This is after I rebooted Time on = 1h 40 min 13 sec & is now AC charging @ 81%

So far I have Power Saving mode on,

Should I be using the apps:
Air Gesture
Air View
Air Command
Motions
Palm motion
Smart Screen / etc?

I have those on and I have followed the advice and disabled sync, I am only syncing when I need it.

One other INTERESTING Tidbit is my CONTACTS I have 8500 contacts in my gmail (not syncing other gmail), it takes a really long time to load (5+ seconds), then when I click a contact it takes another 5 secs then to edit takes another 5 sec. Does this make sense? what is the best way to edit my contacts as well?

Those numbers don't look too bad. Screen time is the biggest battery drain, and it looks like your screen was on for about an hour (64% of 100 min total on time). If you were to continue your use at the current rate, the screen would be on for 4 hours, which isn't too bad for a standard phone without a massive battery. To give you a comparison, my original Razr Maxx (with the monster battery) still only gives at best 5-6 hours of total screen-on time with typical moderate usage. Remember also that games typically use more battery, not just because of screen-on time, but also because of increased processor use.

That is a lot of contacts. I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if the loading time is a little slow with such a huge list. I think the easiest way to edit contacts is to do it on your desktop, using Google Contacts on the web. To get there, bring up Gmail, click on the Gmail dropdown at the upper left, and click Contacts.

Thanks a lot, the main issue I am having beyond the battery life actually is my contacts.

When I moved from the blackberry I had to export them to a csv import them into google. Google did not add the + (country code) signs to the contacts and then made formulas out of them. Now I need to find a program / app that will add the + sign to my contacts from different countries. It's very time consuming on the phone and in the contacts portion of gmail it takes forever. Cannot seem to find any app, have you heard of one? Reason I ask is that whatsapp / viber and a lot of my apps won't sync without the + sign.

This is kind of unrelated... but how do you reset the Battery settings back to zero. For example, mind says 2D 21H 22M 9s on Battery, but I have charged it multiple times since then.
