Battery life problems

I've been having some oddities on my Nexus 5 over the past couple of months. Phone was rebuilt from scratch with Lolipop in place about late May because of power consumption issues. This did help to relieve the problem for a while. I did not restore from Google backups and installed about half of what it had before.

Recently I've been finding power consumption high; not disastrously high, but in particular I've been finding that the phone is held awake almost continuously.

Power was down to about 60% but SOT was less than 15 minutes.

GSAM reports 6% held awake time and the Android System was very busy.

I have rebooted several times with no change on holding awake. I have charged the phone several times and used it down below 40% several times. Today I was in a place with bad signal for 5-6 hours and then was traveling. That probably caused extra cell radio draw and BT draw.

The phone will work fine for several weeks and then do this for several days. I wonder if it is something weird like Google Now indexing inn the background. I don’t use "OK Google" and don't use the search bar on each screen.

And suggestions?

Hi Gary.

Contrary to what is displayed in your illustrations; the "Gas Buddy" app has been known to cause excessive battery drain. I'd try uninstalling that first. Have you tried a factory reset?

I did a factory reset about 4 months ago.

I suspect that the problem is something in Android System that is causing the problem, since gsam shows that as over a quarter of the power drain so far today.

If I've got to factory reset the phone every month then there is a serious problem with using Android phones.

Hmm, it looks like it may be related to having Bluetooth turned on. It seems like held awake toggles with turning BT on and off. Any suggestions on how to clear this up?

Well, I do use it pretty much daily. I can manually turn it on and off (I use it to link to the car for phone and podcasts) or to BT speakers.

It's just a PITA to have to keep turning it on and off, and it didn’t used to be needed. It didn’t hold the phone awake; I've used the same devices for months.

I see. I know from my own experience that using Google Now will cause a noticeable increase in battery consumption and for that reason I have it switched off....with regret, because I like it. Have you considered that?

Any ideas on how to get Bluetooth heaving again? Apparently removing the connections and clearing data don't do the trick.

How did you shut down Google Now?

Anyone notice the battery page in Settings no longer shows everything running? It's only showing screen and Android System now.

To switch off Now, go to the Google app, 3-bar menu top left, Settings, Now cards, and switch off the latter.

Mine is normal. I guess it must be your device.

I have a Nexus 5 ? How could it be unique to my phone? Thanks.

Edit: it populated. I'm not sure why it only showed those two things earlier. Oh well.

Yes, I meant a passing glitch in your own device, rather than something system-wide. I've experienced occasional similar oddities myself.

Yes, I usually don't, so when anything seems amiss I get worried. :)

Any ideas on why my BT radio seems to hold my device awake (original question)? I get much better battery life when I have BT off, but I want to use it for linking to my car and with a BT speaker.

It seems the bluetooth sharing takes all the power; is that just the module that connects to other devices or is it trying to do some other kind of sharing?

I already tried removing all the BT pairings but that didn’t help.
