I've been seeing not very good performance from my brand new Nexus running stock 4.1.1 JB. The screen seems to be taking up a lot of the battery life. What could be causing this?

This screenshot shows light use, some Facebook browsing and Whatsapp messaging. The games I had played from the night before, and I've charged since then. I'm usually on WiFi and I'll usually get like 12 hours out of the phone before it gets to like 30%. I expected much better performance. I've disabled all window animations and transitions, I didn't need them. I've turned down the brightness to zero, yet I still see the screen taking up such a large percentage. I understand its size will cause this but it just seems like a lot compared to what I've seen elsewhere.

For instance, in the video below:

It's amazing how much the screen eats up the battery. Only thing g to recommend is get a spare battery it comes handy

The screen will ALWAYS be the biggest battery drain. Mine's regularly 55%-65% of my drain. If it isn't, then you have a misbehaving app.

The screenshot you've posted looks about right. With normal usage (several account syncing, doing nothing fancy to try and save battery) on WiFi / HSPA+ I do about 15hrs total with 3hrs "screen on" time for the day. This is about what most people are reporting.

If you have a CDMA model the battery life can often be a bit lower than the GSM model.

I understand that the screen will draw most of the battery life, but I was just wondering if it's the norm to have 63% and more attributed to the screen. The video shows less, so I was hoping I could get it down to that.

That is all dependent on how much screen on time versus time on battery. What you're seeing is perfectly normal for what looks to be your usage habits.

12 hours of use and your at 30 percent then your doing good I get 13-17 hours out of mine with 3 and a half hours of on screen time with the OEM extended battery . I really dont know what you expect out this thing its not a RAZR maxx

I'm coming from a Captivate where battery life was one of my biggest problems, so with a brand new phone I had high hopes.

It's because the screen is so much bigger and better. I came from a Fascinate and was shocked at the little battery use you could get with a nexus but that's the price you pay for the screen.

LOL are you kidding me dude? You are looking at get 18+ hours of battery life...The screen is a monster so of course its going to be a big power draw. There arent any devices out there that get more than a day of battery life (save for the RAZR MAXX). I did hear the the iPhone 5 will have an infinite battery though...

The OEM extended battery (2000 mAh) is the only way to go. Makes battery decent (not great, but decent). The stock battery is simply too small.

Well the GNex has a really big nice screen, AMOLED at that, which drains a lot of battery. And 1750mAh isn't the greatest either.

So yes, it's completely normal to see ~60% of your life going to the screen over the course of the battery.

12hrs and STILL at 30%?!
Damn, I'm lucky to get 8hrs of use before it hits 30%.
However, mine is almost 10mos old but still even when new I'd usually get 10hrs of use before it totally drains.
Typically I lose about 10%/hour so I always carry a spare battery just in case I need to go somewhere after work.

To be perfectly blunt, the battery life on the Nexus stinks... In my opinion of course.

Other than that, I love the phone. When I am out and about I carry a back up battery, while in the car, it's plugged in, while at home it's plugged in.

Yea the screen eats up most of it. Where I work we are not even allowed to have our phones in the building. And just checking Email and making a couple of calls durring breaks and lunch the screen still eats up In the high 50s to mid 70s % of the battery used. I ordered the extended battery for my Play Store GSM Gnex but have not gotten it yet. But I guess thats the price you pay for a Hi Deff 720p screen.

Wow, well first off thanks for all the replies. Back when I just got my Cappy, I had ROMs that would give me over 24 hours on battery life. I'll probably have to get that 2100mAh OEM battery. I guess I'll just have to add this to list of trade-offs for this otherwise awesome phone.

Definitely get the OEM extended battery for the GNex. About 15% increase in capacity. For sure worth it.

While the battery life itself isn't that great, it is mostly the stand by time that is bad. As far as performance, it is very comparable to phones like the Maxx. An example of that with me is when I have used iHeartRadio, I get roughly the same amount of time out of the Nexus as I do the Maxx, before needing to plug in and charge.

Something that's a bit off topic. Do you ever feel the back of the Nexus get pretty hot? And it's not the battery, it's the upper left hand side of the back that gets hot. I have no idea why. =\

Normal under heavy use. That's where a lot of the components are, and its where the phone's very thin, so it gets heated up by the screen too.

Yes, I have noticed this on my VZW Galaxy Nexus. I have also noticed this on the Galaxy S III, the Bionic, the Maxx, N7, and iPad.
