While I agree with you that monthly (I think quarterly is more than enough) deep discharges are fine, do you have a link for that Apple advice? I don't think that they recommend that at all for iPads. It's possible that they recommended this in the past (I recall that they used to for Macbooks), but I don't think that they specifically recommend that anymore.
