Be careful with the phone. Sad Day.

So a very sad day. I was getting into my car and as I leaned over the phone fell out of my pocket and hit the cement (about a 3 ft drop). I now have a nice crack on my screen and scratches all along the side. The screen is still viewable and multitouch seems to work fine still, but I think I am going to be SOL for exchanging the phone. Mine is having the GPS issue and extreme instances of lag even with using launcher pro. The speed tests on the internal memory for me seem very low so I was hoping to get an exchange.

Anyone know how stringent AT&T is on exchanges for known issues if there is any physical damage to the device, even if its still usable and not related?

Anyway my point is be very careful with these as they are apparently not the most durable of devices.

Sorry to hear that and unless you have insurance AT&T will more than likely not replace it with physical damage. You are probably screwed. :(

I bought mine at Best Buy and you get the insurance from them not ATT and they cover everything, water and physical, except a loss or theft.

Just don't make a claim, this guy I work with has been 3 weeks waiting on the geek squad to repair his.

If you but it on Amex you get 90 days of accidental damage coverage and an extra year of warranty.

You can return the warranty at any point. Within the 30 day return you get a full refund, after that it is prorated.

are you sure? I believe returns are only accepted if phone is in working condition with no major damage or there is an error associated with the device itself. I dont think user created damage is a viable return option.

I doubt they would replace a brand new phone that was cracked by someone who forgot they had an expensive phone on their lap and decided to stand up without securing it first.

If you have a friend who has a captivate throw your sim card in theirs go buy insurance and viola!

I was talking about the bby warranty. They can be returned to get your money back if you change your mind.

Well, I bought it at one of those Best Buy Mobile places at the mall because they had a buy one get one free sign so I bought one captivate and I got the 2nd one free, the guy that sold it to me said the Best Buy warranty covers anything that happens to the phone as long as you bring it back in, no matter what happened to it.

.. i havent seen anyone mention the warrenty coverage ATT offers.. ($5/month) just curious if anyone is using or has used that before..

Warranty and Insurance are 2 different things. Warranty covers defects and failures, not damage. Insurance covers damage and sometimes loss/theft.

The real trick is to read the warranty - don't rely on what anyone tells you. Unless this warranty states explicitly that it covers damage, then it does not.

Asurion insurance will cover everything not covered under the manufacturers warranty... within the first 12 months of the life of the device, and then Asurion covers for everything including device issues when the phone is out of warranty.

Yes sir but they have a deductible

Yes sir but they have a deductible

Tier 1 is $50 deductible
Tier 2 is $125 deductible

Right now the Captivate is tier 2, but if you look at the coverage list, most phones move from tier 2 to tier 1 about the time refurbs start becoming available.

Ok here is the low down

I didnt get the time to read the whole thread but noticed BBYM and GSBTP mentioned and there seemed to be some confusion so here goes...

Here is the most current and CORRECT info on Best Buy Mobile Geek Squad Black Tie Protection. (this apply to all post paid phones)

Low tier price 6.99
high tier price 9.99
Iphone tier price 14.99

(withdrawn from any credit or debit card once per month)

Low tier up front 119.99
high tier up front 169.99
Iphone tier up front 229.99

(one time fee for 24 months of coverage)

this coverage can be canceled at ANY time and payments will be stopped or the prorated amount returned for those paying upfront.

This coverage has a major plus to ANY carrier provided insurance

$0.00 DEDUCTIBLE (yup NONE)!!!!!! AND UNLIMITED CLAIMS!!!!!!

that's right any damage any crack split brake water soaking melting burning or any other thing you can do to a phone it will be fixed or a refurbished phone sent back to the store in its place. this plan is unlike any other GSBTP plan. it protects against any damage just ask any BBYM Mgr. or LEAD or even the Geek squad DCI. (and Best Buy is the only store im aware of that covers the iphone for damage!!!!) also you can get one battery and charger replacement by mail once a yr and if there isnt a claim on the GSBTP BBYM will give you a good maintenance reward.

the above mentioned down side does however exist. GSBTP wont cover Loss/theft. both of those however are covered under homeowners insurance (normally)

I personally use this coverage on my cell phones and will as long as i can!!!!! well worth every penny! any questions or if you see any problem with this info PLEASE contact me directly @ aceman0455@gmail.com. i'd be happy to help you or point you in the right direction with any issues you may have with a Best Buy Mobile Phone.

Ouch....I had my first drop in the kitchen this weekend and it hurt watching it fall but no physical damage. Makes me want to get a hard case even more now.

Wanted to post update on this as I was able to get the AT&T store today. The store was nice enough to let me exchange the device based on the GPS, lag and MMS issues I was experiencing even though the screen had a crack. I had to be extra nice and after they checked my account history, made an exception.

I am very happy with a nice new phone that seems to be running a bit snappier and the colors look a little less blue as well.

Similar situation. Dropped mine from a height of about 2.5 feet onto carpet. Cracked the screen horizontally about a quarter of the way from the top. Brought it into Frys. Replaced after complaining about lag, screen, and GPS issues. My replacement still has the lag and GPS problems but the screen is a bit better and the glass is intact!
