Before you root, you better read this thread

yeah, that article is like comparing apples to oranges with what we're talking about. Rooting should fall under fair use but there are plenty of clauses in the TOS that clearly prohibit circumventing tethering policies and Verizon would most likely win in the name of "protecting" their network from abuse. I still think it's silly that they claim "unlimited" data yet limit the ways you can use it. On the tiered plans, are they going to get rid of the extra add-on? If I want 2-5GB of data, it shouldn't matter where that data comes from.

I am not convinced verizons tos reflects this ruling, and there lies some confusion for people unfamiliar with android mods. I am not talking tether apps being legal, that is a very debatable subject. Rooting is legal, and that is the law that will hold ii in any suit. Again, root away folks ....your not breaking the law.

Lets not let this thread get out of hand and stay civil. This is not directed at anyone it is just a blanket statement.

with that said,
Rooting = good
Stealing = bad

We should all know what comes along with rooting, the more info the better.

Heck, the only reason I rooted my Thunderbolt was so I could restore my Angry Birds and other app data. If the basic functionality was already there and carriers didn't believe 130MB golf games were required and sit on their hands when it comes to updates, most people probably wouldn't even feel the need to root.

Exactly, the people pulling huge GB by tethering their PS3s, Laptops, Friends laptops etc did this to us.

If Verizon and other carriers wouldn't cram their phone with bloatware, maybe so many people wouldn't root. Personally, it's the only reason I'm thinking of doing it.

Stealing is bad, and Verizon forcing bing, forcing bloat on hardware that you can never remove (hardware you own) isn't exactly an "honest sale now is it?"

After reading quite a bit, I believe thats its true that carriers and the phone manufacturers would like very much for us not to mess with these phones. They would like us not to root our phones or do anything to modify their products. The reasons for this are pretty obvious. I believe that they are doing everything they can to make this harder for us to do.

That being said....after reading the opinions of some very talented individuals and yes speaking to store employees. I believe they simply do not have the capability to tell weather a phone is rooted or not.

Can they tell if your running a "LEAKED" ROM....yes, but can they tell if your rooted, no. The leaked ROM business is a very specific sort of hack, and honestly not what most of us are doing anyway. Can they tell if your tethering?...no, can they guess that based on your usage if your illegally tethering and try to stop you, absolutely.

I have no worries about running a rooted phone.

Has nothing to do with GB. It has been rolling for a long time according to P3Droid. Everyone could do the same on the last few Osseous too.

"The driving forces for device lock down was theft of service by rooted users"

The tethering hacks are a huge part of the problem. It also affects everybody on the network so we should be in favor of carriers cracking down.

this is just to try to "scare" people who are thinking of rooting. if vzw lost the business of all the people who are rooted, thats millions of dollars in revenue a year.

It's just about the money. I'd bet the number of people using a significant amount of bandwidth has very little effect on other's performance. That would basically be saying that their network they like to brag about couldn't handle a little more stress which would be quite lol-worthy.

I think you're overestimating how many people root. Basing the popularity of rooting on internet forums is not going to be an accurate representation of the totals. If I asked 100 random people on the street if their phone was rooted, I doubt more than 5 would even know what that meant.

this, i am sure 85-90% of the android community on vzw is not tethered/rooted, so a small percentage will not effect the network as bad as some people say it does
