I followed this thread yesterday on the XDA forums and had even thought about posting a thread over here for discussion, but it did not take long to discover that it would be a waste of time and counter productive. No one wants to discuss "what" could be done about it if it does come down to this and it is all hypothetical as of right now.
While I respect P3 for his contributions to the community I am also very wary of anyone who says they are privy to certain information that no one else is aware of. I would have to believe that with the vast number of devs working on Android someone else would be aware of this. Which, as of right now, does not seem to be the case.
I would also have to wonder why it is that certain phone manufactures are opening up to unlocking bootloaders (Moto) if the carriers are going to force out people for simply rooting their devices. I do not feel this is going to be the case.
While I do not agree, I can understand the desire of carriers to apply the banhammer to folks for tethering and using their mobile device as a replacement for alternative internet access (especially with the implementation of 3.9G, which brings with it speeds comparable to some land based internet services). It comes down to money and added stress to their network (we all know which of those two are more important to VZW). I am not here to argue for Verizon but it clearly states in VZW's ToS, which we all willingly signed, that this is not an acceptable use of the mobile data services. That point pretty much makes the argument that "I signed for unlimited data, so I will use it as I please" moot.
The ToS can be found here.
Whatever does come of this, we have yet to see, and chances are good we will not have a lot of say in the final decision. What we will have is the opportunity to either stay with the carriers and conform to their belief system or move out of the smartphone world and back to using a phone as a phone.
