Nothing kept my old phone running, but Titanium Backup did make my life a lot easier.

Titanium Backup and the EStrong File/Task Managers. And before you flame, I just use the task manager to kill bad tasks when necessary, never to do it automatically. It just saves me a few clicks when I do have to kill a task.
