I've used Avast on my G3 since I got the phone but recently uninstalled it in favor of the AVG app. Since neither have picked up anything yet the default Verizon Protection app picked up something (it picked up Red Bull Air Racing. Anyone have problems with this game?) what's the best free anti-virus/spyware/malware for Android? Also, since uninstalling Avast (I had the anti-theft in use. It really hides in the background when enabled) it seems my system is a slight bit slower with AVG. Not a significant amount but it's just noticeable to me, I'm good with electronics but I'm not a tech-wiz.

Welcome to Android Central! I would guess that Red Bull Air Racing was probably flagged more for adware or similar annoyingware, rather than malware. True malware is still relatively hard to get on Android, as long as you stick with reliable app sources like Google Play Store or Amazon Appstore, avoid installing apk files from filesharing sites, and keep the "Verify Apps" option checked on in Settings>Security. Verify Apps essentially allows Google to be your antivirus--it lets Google scan the apps on your device, looking for known malicious apps or code. I used to be of the opinion that it never hurts to have an antivirus app installed, given the fast pace of malware development--but Google's efforts have made me feel better about this, allowing me to be more comfortable going antivirus-free.

That being said, many antivirus apps do provide added value, mostly in the form of antitheft features. Lookout has a nice feature where it will take a picture with the front-facing camera if the screen unlock is unsuccessful 3 times in a row--then it emails the picture to you. They usually have features like locating your lost phone, remote wipe, etc.--but these are also things that Android Device Manager can do as well.

I do a lot of Internet browsing so, just being on the Internet has it disadvantages (and my favorite site had been hacked before :( no its not anything bad. Plus in my hobby I need to use many references that I don't always know how safe the site is.), so if there is a better AV/AM/AS it'd be helpful, I guess.

And yes, I do have the Verify Apps feature on. Never off.

I think you not need antivirus....Just not go to BAAAD websites and you don't get viruses!

Excuse me but I never mentioned which sites I visit except that they were NOT anything bad (hence weren't).

You probably don't need any. The anti-virus apps in Google play only scan for bad apps that you have installed. They aren't like desktop anti-virus programs that scan your entire system looking to see if you picked something up from a bad website. In fact as far as I know there isn't currently any way to scan your phone like that.
As long as you're only downloading from Google Play there is no need for anti-virus software on your Android device

Antivirus applications for Android gadgets have broken from over a year ago. Despite Android's most extreme security, there are number of individuals who simply need to have some extra security for sure 'on the off chance that' situations.
