Hi guys,

I'm a long time user of CyanogenMod and SlimBean/Kat and have tried most ROMs available for both the Defy and N4.

I'm currently using the latest stable SlimKat which I find to be excellent but have found most other ROMs to be lacking in some respect.

What're you using and which ROMs would you recommend?

I have been on Beanstalk official for some time now, although every couple of months I always try several current ROMs just to see if I like any of them better, most recently I tried Slimkat, Paranoid Android, LiquidSmooth, XenonHD, CarbonROM, and Purity (might be missing one or two) and after trying them all I keep going back to Beanstalk Official.

I have also tried several kernels with Beanstalk, and the most stable and battery friendly I have found is Hells-Core, running a minimum clock of 192Mhz, max 1512Mhz, Intellidemand governor, and Zen I/O Scheduler, it also supports DT2W, headphone poweramp control (+3 is perfect for me) and custom Gamma profiles if that's your thing.

The two combined together is very stable, battery friendly, and feature rich... Highly recommend it.

Sweet. I've installed Beanstalk 4.4+ and Hells Core B43.

I'm liking that it has all the settings I need (including Dark UI and Pie Controls), something of a rarity for me, which is why after trying a lot of ROMs I decided to stick with CM / SlimKat.

Thanks for the pointer. I'll let you know if it does the job.

I tried Beanstalk + Hellscore Kernel and my phone spontaneously switched off on a number of occasions and wouldn't response to the power button for minutes afterward.

I've gone back to SlimKat (4.4.4) with its default kernel and haven't looked back.

Have you thought about Factory 4.4.4 + Xposed Framework? Then just load the tweaks you need via modules and throw in a quality custom kernel like franco...

I haven't actually, might be worth a shot.

I shall consider it.

Try out the Android L developer preview port. The latest version 4.9.9.9.9.9.9.9.9 to my current knowledge, is really stable and smooth especially considering its a port of a preview.

Did that a few weeks back, I found the battery life to be terrible.

Somehow I missed this a while back, it seems this thread dropped off my notifications somehow... might be a little late now but by default Hellscore kernel is undervolted -100mV across the board, you can use Hellscore Kernel Manager and up the voltage 25mV-100mV across the board in increments of 25 until the problem disappears. The default kernel in Beanstalk is decent, mostly just the stock CM kernel.

Then again, if you like Slim... stick with it.
