I bought a newer, faster card for portable storage. What format is the best: exfat, nfwhatever?

Many will tell you not to use adoptive storage. I used it and no real issues with it at all. Just make sure you are using the cloud for all of your important stuff, just in case the SD card decides to die. It wasn't slow or choppy at all for me. I had to use it because 32GB base is just not enough on the Moto Z Force Droid.

I recommend portable storage as you can take the card out and use it in another phone either now or down the road when you switch phones.

The few benefits of adoptive, to me, are far outweighed by the portability factor of the other.

I see I didn't address your question at all, sorry. Not really sure about which format for the card as mine came formatted and I never gave it a thought.

Good points here. If you never want to take the SD card out (and just use USB connection to access it), then adoptable is what you want, especially if you want more available app storage.
