Best SMS/MMS app for Nexus 5?

I may be the only one who actually likes using Hangouts as my default SMS app. Using it on my Nexus 5 and actually made it the default on my Note 3 and Moto X as well. If I wasn't using it I'd probably go back to my "old faithful" Textra.

I would use hangouts but I just don't like how it lacks basic features.. I never did figure out how to attach images.. Plus it is confusing with the hangouts vs SMS contacts..

I have been on the lookout for a good SMS since the default on my Nexus is hangouts..

I tried Evolve SMS and that was a nice UI.. but i just couldn't get use to a big E icon for texts.
I tried the Ninja SMS.. but couldn't get use to the UI
I didn't even download Chomp or GoSMS because I like things simple and fast.. plus the more complex.. the more problems..
I tried the SLIDESMS but that only lasted a few hours because the UI was difficult for me to get used too..
I used 8sms on my S4 until i got my Nexus.. and it is a nice app.. just not sure i like having the contact picture on each message... I also read on the playstore that a lot of people don't like 8sms after the most recent update.

*WINNER - TEXTRA ***
For me this was a great lightweight app.. has all of the basic features I was looking for.. seems to run smoothe and no problems so far.
I like that it has a text message style app icon so it looks more "stock".
Textra also has GIF's. which is very cool and works on more phones that i send them to then i expected! :)

if anyone else has an SMS app they use.. please let us know as i'm always willing to try new things.

I have tried Hangouts, 8SMS, Textra, and AOSP sms. Although I truly enjoyed the Textra UI and numerous customizations, I was having problems with MMS. These problems persisted with 8SMS as well. Not being very fond of Hangouts UI, I have found minimal to no problems using AOSP. Mind you, I remained in the same location under similar weather conditions, when comparing the ability to send MMS. Call me crazy, but this is the reason for my choice of alternative SMS/MMS app. :p

Tried Handcent, the quick reply window freaked out handling fast arriving multiple texts. Currently using AOSP. Does the job...

I like the idea of this for texting my football team, will check it out.

Try HOLA SMS it is really amazing! you can send FREE SMS and see when your friends are online...

You should try Sliding SMS, it's my preferred texting app due to the fact that I didn't really like the hangouts app

Has anyone tried Hello SMS? It's missing a few useful features such as individual notifications and scheduled texts, but other than that it's a very user friendly layout and looks the part too. Hopefully it'll get some feature additions soon. In the meantime it's still my new messaging app, over Evolve SMS.

Yes...I am quoting myself. LOL

Apparently the MMS problems I was having were Straight Talk related. Have since moved to T-Mobile and using Textra with great success.

I am using an AT&T compatible SIM from StraightTalk as well in my Nexus 5. And I don't really like the Hangouts UI either.
I have tried Textra, Hello SMS, GO SMS, Handcent, Chomp, Now SMS, Easy SMS.

But I am trying 8SMS now, and I might like it. Sliding SMS looks nice and similar too. So I might try it too.

8SMS is a great alternative. However, the picture icons for the contacts is a bit grainy or blurry. This is not a problem with Textra. Everything looks crystal clear and the UI is very easy to get used to.
