Best SMS/MMS app for Nexus 5?

Sliding messaging pro is awesome. A lot of Custom things can be done to it.

If I tell google to text someone, it does, but only shows up in hangouts, not in Textra. Do the texts you send from voice commands show up in the MYSMS app? Also how does it handle group texts?

You all may as well stay with Hangouts because pretty clearly Google will eventually implement automatic hangouts routing of sms messages, i.e. same as Apple's iMessage. So when Google do that you will all have to come back.

For those using third party apps, can you text by voice using the "OK Google" command ?

Yes, the text gets sent and received, but I cannot see a record of it in textra

Hangouts is ok but it lacks a few things. One, you cant make the conversation bubbles different colors, there is no number badge and no popup window. I used handcent for a long time and it is very good IMO but i set my default to Textra that i was using before i got my Nexus 5. I really like the popup window to reply to my texts(though the popup is better with handcent) and it handles group texting well.

Hangouts still has a ways to go imo to be as good as those other two.

Same here. The quick reply feature rocks.

It will keep a record in 8SMS. It's a pretty good app so far.

just installed 8sms. it shows my voice texts! It is not as customizable as textra, but voice texts are more important to me. We will see how it handles group texts. So far it shows each parties name, which textra did as well. Lack of customization of the texts makes me think I might as well use hangouts. I will give 8sms a chance.

How to forward an SMS which I received to another mobile - I couldn't figure it out in Hangouts except copy past in new SMS. Any help?

Textra has a long press and select to forward from top right menu.

Both are not straight forward in forwarding SMS - Hangout is another step behind - OR Am I doing something wrong?

Hold down/long press on the text and forward will become one of the options.

For those using or sticking with Hangouts, how are you dealing with the MMS issues? I'm trying to understand how widespread or universal the MMS issues in this thread are... Is this just "standard" Android behavior? Is it something particular with stock Android? Does carrier or device matter from either the sender or recipient side? I don't remember this behavior on my last Android device, a Note...

The regular Messaging app handles MMS a little bit better, but will display multiple pics in a single message as a very tiny slideshow--definitely not ideal, but can be worked around by saving the pics first and viewing them in Photos. Maybe I just use group messaging/MMS more than others, but I would think this would cause a decent number of customer sat issues for carriers, particularly for users switching from something like an iPhone to an Android device.

Thanks for any insights, and Merry Christmas!

I have T-Mobile and dont have MMS isues with Hangouts.

Do people--particularly iPhone users--ever send you multiple pics in a single message? Or send you a single message with both text and a pic?

Ii have sent group pics but havent recieved any. I dont know what kind of phones they all have. I know i sent ,one has a Windows phone and one has a android and it worked fine.

I don't like having my "Circles" and people I'm following lumped into my contacts - sorry Hangouts. I use Textra as default and Telegram for secure information as it offers end-to-end encryption.

Go into Hangouts > Settings > your account > Log Off. Hangouts is now SMS/MMS only.

I couldn't get used to Hangouts either so I went back to Go SMS Pro, and I've used Textra too which was a nice little lightweight messaging app. Last week I switched to Evolve SMS though. I'd highly recommend it! Lovely UI and works great. I paid about 60p and 90p to upgrade and unlock some extra features. Well worth the pennies!

Not liking hangouts, don't want it attached to a chat program thingie Trying Textra, which looks like it should do everything I want.

Then again, I liked the old stock android SMS app.

There's something I don't like about Hangout. I Google best SMS and love Textra...keep it simple.
