BEWARE - Many bad USB-C Cables Out There!!

Is it chargers or cables or both? I have a mytouch car charger that's USB a that I've been using forever and works great. I just ordered the 6p with 2 Google USB A-C cables. I can use the Google cables in any charger since obviously the Google cable is approved right? I have some other USB A chargers thought out my house I still would like to use. They're all fine as long as an approved cable is plugged in right?

Correct.

The risk is the cables. If you have correct cables you can use any charger you want.

So is there any risk in using a long USB-C to C cable like this with Google's own wall charger?

I've been looking for a 10 ft USB-C to C cable and with all this compliance talk, I've been leery in trying the few that are out there.

Been using it all week and works perfectly and is now approved by Benson. I say go for it.

CableMatters already came through with my replacement order... less than 24hours after I submitted a ticket with customer service, and confirmed my shipping address...

Hello,

Thank you for confirming that with us. I have just processed your order for 3 replacement cables. Here is the USPS tracking information for your package: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Please don’t hesitate to let us know if there is anything else we can help you with.

I received a tracking number early this morning as well. Hopefully the new cable arrives before I embark on my roadtrip.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, is the reason for no usb-c to c cables over 3feet meeting compliance have to do with there has been no testing for cables longer than that according to the spec being so fledgling? The layout of my room is weird so I need a long USB-C cable of at least 6ft to charge my phone at home using the rapid charger that Google included. Right now I place my phone across the room, charge it, and then place it next to my bed relying upon doze when I go to bed. Not a horrible solution because I generally wake up with 98% still left, but I'd prefer it next to my bed.

I just got an interesting response from JOTO about my cable. I emailed them (through Amazon) asking if they will be updating their product to comply with USB-C specifications and their reply, in a nutshell, was, "sorry you are unhappy with our product - we're issuing you a refund. Thanks."

I guess they have no plans to update and/or correct their cable.

Weird.

I bought an i-orange usb-c to usb-a that was approved by Benson. I asked the company about a 6ft a to a cable and it looks like they just released it. Going to wait until I see a review from Benson or it ends up on the spreadsheet. Fingers crossed cause I'd love a nice 6ft high quality cable.

I have that long i-orange one and currently using it with an Anker 45w 5 port charger without issue.

Got all of my cables before I even considered companies were going to mess this up.

Anyone have the cable specs that these people are messing up? Some sort of identifying resistor somewhere?

I posted this in another thread but, to ensure everyone sees it, OnePlus is now acknowledging the issue with their cables and offering a refund for those that want it.

I got this response from Cable Matters after both cables I ordered off Amazon earlier this week failed the CheckR test...

Our Cable Matters team has recently discovered that there is a potential risk when using our current Cable Matters® USB Type C (USB-C) to Type A (USB-A) Cables. However, we found that risk is only applicable if that cable is being connected to a computer or similar host device. If you are using this cable simply as a charging cable plugged into a USB charger, there is no risk.

Are USB-C to USB-C cables okay though? I have longer one but stopped using it because I am being cautious now. It seems USB-A to C is all he's concerned with?

You are correct, for the most part. All USB-C cables should be able to handle a 3A draw, because it is part of the inherent design. So - any product with a USB-C port should theoretically be able to provide the proper current through the cable. However, there are some USB-C chargers that are getting a "fail" rating on Benson's tests.

Always check the spreadsheet for the latest test results (see the last two entries at the very bottom).

Bought mine from China for cheap. They work like a charm. Been using them for the last month on 6P and 5X no issue whatsoever. I wouldn't get caught up in the mythology. Enjoy your phone/s before the new models are introduced.
