Unlocking wipes. Locking doesn't. And locking isn't required to receive or apply the OTA. The OTA doesn't care what your bootloader lock state is.

No locking the device didn't help for me. I get the same issue
"Get halfway through the progress bar where the little green android is laying down with its hood open, I get a red exclamation mark. And everything stops"
Apparently it does, because it didn't work when I was unlocked. I locked it and it worked.
Something else was your issue. I can 100% guarantee you that an OTA doesn't care if your bootloader is locked or unlocked.
Well it was root access then. But why would you have an unlocked phone without rooting it? I look at it as one in the same. (but I do understand the difference)
