Bionic and ICS

18 months - Google and the major OEMs (and I believe that this is a requirement to get the Google apps on the phone) agreed to keep phones updated for 18 months after release. However, carriers still need to approve. And I don't think that this necessarily means that they will get the latest Android version - it could be that Moto makes sure that the phone gets a build of 2.3.7, for example.

If I was a betting man, I would bet that the Bionic will get ICS at some point, though it may take a few months.

I would like to think that the Bionic, GS2, RAZR, etc etc would get ICS first because ICS was optimized for dual core phones. Course one could only hope, still doesn't mean that Verizon will let them push out ICS without first murdering it with their malware!

I would say the RAZR will get ICS beforre the Bionic and the Bionic probably won't get it till 2nd 1/4 of 2012.

Moto just announced the RAZR (I hate typing that name) would be getting ICS in "early 2012". I expect the Bionic release will be right around the same time. There can't be much difference between the two phones, and I expect they'll try to unify their Blur interface between the two pretty closely.

I expect we'll see ROMs long before that.

I dont know, I have a feeling the Bionic will see ICS before the RAZR. They will still be working out all the launch bugs and issues with the RAZR while the Bionic will be all patched up and ready to go in Nov.

Are we talking about OTA or leaked?

Hoping for

OTA, mid-February,
Leaked, mid-January.

I agree with this line of thinking. Correct me if I'm wrong but the Bionic is using the reference platform for ICS. I'd be surprised if there weren't early builds floating around MOTO right now.

The Bionic and RAZR should both be reference platforms for ICS. Except Google's trying to push those HD screens now, so technically no. But in general, the Bionic and RAZR are both running a version of the TI OMAP4, which is the reference platform in terms of CPU. And I WOULD be surprised if early builds were floating around Motorola right now...I don't expect them to do anything until the source is released.
CyanogenMod will be getting ICS as soon as they release the source...which will be about the same time (probably a little later) than the time the Galaxy Nexus is released. CM isn't the only ROM around, so most likely we'll see some others around in form of SDK ROMs soon (which Phil has already posted about..basically play with that and then switch to a ROM made from the source AOSP) and then ROMs made from the source. So...if Motorola doesn't have an OTA for the Bionic by Christmas...I know someone else will...but it'll be a custom ROM, which I'm totally fine with lol.

If the Bionic doesn't see ICS roughly the same time as the RAZR, I wont buy another Motorola device ever again. In today's day and age, there's really no excuse to not update devices, and make people happy. Regardless if they have an old device or not and if Motorola doesn't want to put resources to upgrading old devices, it should be their responsibility to UNLOCK THE BOOTLOADER so we can do it ourselves.

and just to show you have much I like Motorola, I have the Backflip, the Droid1, The DroidX, the Atrix and the Bionic.

I have the dock for the Droid 1, dock for the Droid X, the MM dock for the Atrix, and the standard and MM dock for the Bionic.

I'll simply stop buying their hardware. Companies get so caught up in profits they don't realize not supporting US, the people who buy their stuff, is biting the hands that feed.

Of course we will get ICS for Bionic. If they didn't, the phone would be completely obsolete (instead of just plain obsolete) once Nexus Prime roles out with ICS. Motorola wouldn't be able to sell anymore Bionics if there was no ICS. Even though Bionic will be obsolete once Nexus Prime comes, Motorola will still be able to cut the price of the Bionic and sell them as long as there's ICS on the horizon. It's all about profits, and Moto isn't gonna just let Bionic die on the vine - it will still be a damn good phone (although I'd rather have the Nexus if I wasn't locked in to Bionic already). But I'm not gonna fret over that.
