Bionic behaving like battery conservation is on all the time.

Hello everyone. So, I am having yet another issue with my droid bionic. This has been by far the worst phone I have owned so for, and I can't wait to get rid of the thing.

So,this time around I am getting strange issues with wifi and the yahoo messenger application. The phone behaves as if it goes into a battery conservation mode. When i am at home, I typically set the phone for airplane mode and then turn the WIFI on, since 95% of my communications are through data services rather than phone. I do this because battery life is so horrid if you leave the 4G on. For months, this worked perfectly. Now suddenly the wifi keeps turning itself off after a few minutes, and does not turn back on again until I pick up the phone and try to use a data dependent app. The phone is set for "performance" on the battery mode. Background data is enabled, and I can't find any setting that would indicate a time-out option on the WIFI connection.

The other issue that surfaced at the same time is with the yahoo messenger application. The phone will go through long periods where it will not deliver messages to me. It will send messages, it will use all other data services normally, but it will not deliver messages to me on yahoo. Then it will deliver sometimes dozen's of messages all at once when it finally wakes up. It does this on both 4G and WIFI. The timing is random and completely unpredictable, except that it is pretty much quaranteed that when my girlfriend attempts to ask me one of those loaded female test questions, it will not be delivered to me, and then she will get angry at me for not answering her. this app worked fine for nearly a year, then suddenly stopped working correctly without any changes to the phone or application.

The two problems both surfaced at the same time, which makes me wonder if they are in some way related. I have gone so far as to completely reset the phone back to factory specs, then reload all my apps etc, and it still is doing the same thing. It's driving me insane.

Anybody have any ideas?

If you leave airplane mode off will wifi stay on? If so you could easily set up toggles for BT, cell radio, GPS and just hit them separately, or use something like Tasker or Juice Defender to do it.

If wifi turns off even with airplane mode off, it sounds like you've got a defective phone.

It does it when 4g is on as well, which ends up killing the battery. If it is a bad phone, it will be the third. :(

Why put it into airplane mode? WIFI, 3G and 4G should all be sharing the same antenna, so when you turn WIFI on and connect, it disables your 4G connection.

There's really no point to put airplane mode on unless you specifically do not want voice calls to go through.. and then what happens in an emergency and you have to call 911?

also, go to Wireless & network settings - Wi-Fi Settings. Press the menu button and go to Advanced. make sure the WiFi sleep policy is set to Never.

While this is the default setting, I was thinking that this was the issue, too. Perhaps it was changed to sleep when the screen was off somehow?

I didn't realise that advanced settings menu was there in the wifi settings. Thanks for pointing that out, it appears this was the issue with the WIFI at least. I have no idea how it got changed, or how it remained that way through a full factory reset, but it was set to "never sleep when plugged in". I suspect my girlfriends 4 year old daughter might have somehow gotten into that when she was playing with my phone a few weeks ago, but how it stayed that was through a reset is baffling.

The messenger issue remains though. So far I have removed and reinstalled it, and completely reset the phone and it still does the same. the application seems to be working fine for everyone else I have spoken to.

I am not sure on the Messenger app.. if she has an Android phone, why not use Google Talk?

believe me, I would LOVE to abandon yahoo. Good luck selling that to my girlfriend though. She works from home on the PC all day and doesn't have a smartphone. She hates phones in general.

Skype, google chat, ANYTHING to get away from yahoo. But it is not possible. Believe me, I have been trying for over 2 years. She's going to go to her grave clinging to yahoo messenger, because she knows how it works and does not want to learn anything else.

I'd just install google talk on her PC, and when you send her an IM she'll be curious what it is.. after a few sentences of typing, I'm sure she'll warm up.

Tried that, she deleted it in about 4 minutes. She has also deleted skype, and MSN when I installed them. She is abolutely dead-set against changing yahoo, despite the fact it is horrifically unreliable, hacking prone, and bloated as a program.

I'm stuck with it. It's either live with yahoo, or leave her, and I made my choice.

She can be extraordinarily stubborn. She's Russian, and some of the stereotypes are true in her case. LOL!

Do you have any automatic task manager apps installed - the ones that automatically close background messages on a schedule? If so, try uninstalling it and see if that fixes the Yahoo Messenger issue.

Otherwise, there are other IM apps that say that they support communicating with Yahoo messenger.

I haven't used IM in years myself, so I can't tell you anything from personal experience, but you could try one of these instead. (BeeJive appears to be a goo Yahoo replacement...)
