I just rooted 2.1 cause you all got me paranoid that we should not update to the official 2.2 since it may close up holes that birdman is working on.

Indeed, after being rooted and finding out all the little but great things you can do with the phone, I'm waiting on the verdict on whether 2.2 can still be rooted the same way as 2.1, before restoring the phone back to stock 2.1 for the update.

I read a post saying that that the exploit is hardware-based, so there's no way for Motorola to patch it now. But we'll see...I still remember how angry the community was that the DX had so much security encryption, but the hacking community still managed to pull together and tear it apart. :D

I'm flashing the .sbf right meow. I'll be turning off the X and using my Incredible until the OTA 2.2 is rooted (probably by the weekend) and then I'll update the X and root it right afterwards.

Birdman's latest tweet...

RT @_mrbirdman_: Im ready to turn this froyo update into my whore :)....root method and such will follow shortly after release :)

Updating and having a new bootloader is a bigger deal. I am sure that the crack will be out within days, at the most. But upgrading could affect the path to being able to open up your bootloader, since flashing back with sbf does not reset the bootloader. And because of this I will avoid the update and keep my leaked 2.2.

I'll give Mr. Birdman an hour to determine if the bootloader has been changed or not. If it hasn't changed, it's update time! If it has changed, it's debate whether or not to update time!

This. I'm personally going to find out myself tomorrow at 12:01pm EST when my girlfriend's forced, no volunteered for the official 2.2. I'll post up the details when it happens. I will be updating my thread about whether you should update or not if you intend to hack, as the boot-loader is my only real concern.

Birdman just tweeted to hold off on the ota update and will have a pre rooted update zip for us :)

it's the update.zip file, which contains the new OS, but it has been modified to already have su permissions (root) so you don't have to root it after install.

That's cool don't try and sbf back to 2.1 unless you want an expensive paper weight

@jredcop...that *should* be the case. The new OTA brought along with it a nasty new bootloader that won't allow you to sbf back to 2.1 if you are unhappy with it.

From what I've researched, Moto changed the Code Group on both bootloaders for OTA 2.2. Therefore, none of the former sbf's will work to return to 2.1 and if you try, it bricks the phone. It won't be known until some take their phones in to Verizon today to get their bricked phones fixed, if the stores have a current .sbf to recover these. As the day wear on, we'll learn more I'm sure.

Wonder what's taking Birdman so long. I am getting antsy. There is a near one-click root method now available based on the Droid 2 that has me itching to update now.
