Bit of market research

Not open for further replies.
1. I rarely stumble upon new apps in the market.
2. Usually recommendations
3. Lack of documentation on how to use the app
4. If instructions are available, I read them
5. If I enjoy the game and the price is a good value
6. Occasionally, but I mostly stick to single player games
7. Single
8. even split between Amazon and Android Markets
9. I do not like that type of feature. Also opposed to open feint because of their statement that I do not like to have fun because I do not use their service. I have been known to pass on an app because of open feint.
10. Frequently, especially if it is a paid app.

2. Do you rely on recommendations or do you search categories to find new games?

6. no
7. I like online multiplayer card games and such, but for platformers, puzzle, rpg etc. I prefer single player for my phone and tablet.

1. As others have said, the new market makes it harder to notice new apps.

2. If someone I know recommends a game, I'll definitely check it out. I also look at the reviews, but take them with a grain of salt.

3. Not having a clear way to quit the game.

4. If it appears to be very well done and is a good value.

5. If there is a concise demo, I will check it out, unless the game is self-explanatory.

6. Very rarely.

7. Single player, and especially ones that make it easy to stop. (not going on forever)

8. Pretty equal between Market and Amazon.

9. Not really. I don't want everyone to think that all I do is play games.

10. I'll always spread the word about a good game.

2. Both, but not equally
3. Some games are not compatible with all phones.
4. Wing it, unless I can't figure it out. I want a causal gaming experience not an in depth process.
5. Other than best selling games from other platforms...rarely if ever.
6. No, in fact, I have never even heard of the concept.
7. Single
8. Android Market, though I use all three to price compare.
9. Of course! thought its not essential in my purchase of a game.

- No. I rely on web sites like AC for discovering new stuff, or recommendations from friends.

2. Do you rely on recommendations or do you search categories to find new games?
- Almost 100% recommendations. Occasionally the "people who bought this app also tried these:" feature.

3. What is the most annoying problem with a new game e.g. force close, poor graphics?
- FC, and bad/unusable controls

4. Do you read the instructions on how to play or just Wing it?
- Instructions

5. When would you pay for a game? (Other than mobile versions of best selling PC/PSP etc games).
- If a game is well done it's worth paying for, but I tend to stick to the sub $3 range considering there are so many good games out there for that price.

6. Do you play games where multiplayer involves passing the handset round?
-Nope, never

7. Do you prefer single player or multiplayer games?
- Single player

8. Where do you download most of your games i.e. Android market, Amazon, GetJar?

9. Do you like games where you can upload your scores to Facebook or other websites?
- Absolutely hate that feature. If Facebook is required it's an instant non-starter.

10. Do you recommend games you like to friends?
- Absolutely!

1. Not really. I do like that they updated the sort to "Top New Paid and Free" - that really helps. I actually have found my favorite new apps here on Android Central.

2. Both. I usually read the user reviews before I d/l any app to see if its worthwhile.

3. if it is a server based game (Fightin' Words) and the server times out so the board does not update. Force close (when it happens - rare for me)

4. I read them if they are presented to me at the beginning of the game.

5. It would have to be a top favorite game for me and one that has more levels, bonus rounds then the free version. I can deal with ads on the free versions.

6. no.

7. Both. Multiplayer for Scrabble-like game is a must. Otherwise I prefer single player.

8. Currently Amazon due to the Free App of the Day. If the Android Market had the same - I'd be all over it.

9. no. I don't use Facebook.

10. Yes, if they have an Android device.

1) Not at all, have to keep up with multiple Android websites to find the newest goodies.

2) I'll check out recommendations from my friends on Google+, only ever search for "RPG" to find new games.

3) Apps running in a window with black bars all around, ie not full screen. Games without controller support.

4) Never

5) I will usually find the apk through other means, and if I like the app, I buy it when it updates.

6) Never

7) Single Player

8) Android Market

9) No, hate having my feed filled with games my friends are playing that I have no interest in.

10) Yes, very often.

New apps are hard to find! There should be a search in the app directory for new apps or new apps since.......

I usually browse for new stuff. If you search for a specific title you get so many "promoted apps" it makes the search almost useless!

I usually wing it and go read the instructions if I need to!

I do not mind paying for software that I want or need. I consider $3 for a program very reasonable!

Not really a big gamer but do enjoy Angry Birds and Suduko
Most downloads run great for me!

Not really a big gamer but do enjoy Angry Birds and Suduko. Do not like fast games, too old for that!

1. generally speaking, yes
2. I rely almost exclusively on searching for apps that I've read about or were recommended to me outside the market; I will occasionally search for an app based on a general description or task I'm trying to find, but not often
3. for a phone-based game, I want something that can be played for as little as 1-2 minutes at a time just to fill in gaps in my day; also, my phone is a tool that I use all day long, so I don't want to flush 50% of the battery life away on games if I have to be productive for the rest of the day on the same battery charge
4. usually wing it at first, if it's not intuitive I'll check out the how-to/instructions
5. if it meets the criteria in #3 above, and to alleviate annoying ads ;)
6. no
7. single
8. mostly Android, some Amazon

1. Do you find it easy to discover new apps on the Android Market?
Unless an app is featured on the main page, in a top 10 list, or recommended, it is very hard for me to discover new apps.

2. Do you rely on recommendations or do you search categories to find new games?
Yes I primarily rely on recommendations and features.

3. What is the most annoying problem with a new game e.g. force close, poor graphics?
Unnecesary permissions (makes me not trust it), and no exit button (i.e. the only way to get out of the game is to press the phones home button.)

4. Do you read the instructions on how to play or just Wing it?
I read instructions, but I prefer tutorials that are built into the game (i.e. the first level or two are tutorial levels)

5. When would you pay for a game? (Other than mobile versions of best selling PC/PSP etc games).
I usually only pay for what I consider high-end games (for example gameloft games, not "casual" or "time-waster" games), and usually only when they are on sale.

6. Do you play games where multiplayer involves passing the handset round?
No

7. Do you prefer single player or multiplayer games?
I prefer single player, but having a multiplayer option is good.

8. Where do you download most of your games i.e. Android market, Amazon, GetJar?
Ranked in order of where I get most of my games:
Android Market (60%)
Amazon Free App of the Day (30%)
Gameloft (9%)
GetJar (1%)

9. Do you like games where you can upload your scores to Facebook or other websites?
No.

10. Do you recommend games you like to friends?
Yes.

4. Wing it =)
5. If it will hold my interest for more than a week or 2.
6. Not usually.
7. I prefer single player.
8. All 3.
9. I?m indifferent to that, but I don?t usually allow games to access my Facebook information.

1. I discover new apps everday. I find searching a random thought or app leads me to tons more that I wasn't even looking for. I find myself using the new marketplace more than appbrain.
2. If I don't have a particular game in mind I usually go to the recommendations. Or the free app of the day on Amazon market.
3. Force closes are always annoying, but I my most annoying feature is a lack of 'ease of use'. When I move a stack of cards in a solitaire game I don't want to have to struggle to pick a specific card and move it exactly right to the next column. In other words, ease of use, and smooth interface are key.
4. I like to read the instructions, sometimes after I try it first, but I like to have an idea what I'm getting myself into.
5. If I play the free version and get hooked.
6. No, the only multiplayer game I play is words with friends and that doesn't count for this.
7. Single player or versus a computer.
8. Most of mine are from Android market, but like I said before, if there's a cool game for free on Amazon I'll get it.
9. I don't like to share my scores, mostly because I HATE seeing my timeline filled with other people's scores and I don't want to annoy my friends, because they don't care either!
10. I do if we're talking about phone apps. I'm in the cell phone biz, so I recommend games to customers all the time. I put my favorites on an app sheet I created for new Android customers or those looking for something new. I'm a little app obsessed! :D

I usually wing it until I get stuck, then refer back to instructions find out what I missed

I'll pay for RPGs and FPS type games, but only if there isn't a micropayment system involved.

Yes, but not on a normal basis

1. Do you find it easy to discover new apps on the Android Market?
A: I primarily use search in the market for a specific title, and web search on my regular computer to find out if there's an android game like something I've played before.

2. Do you rely on recommendations or do you search categories to find new games?
A: I almost never browse the categories. I might look at promoted games in the web Market.

3. What is the most annoying problem with a new game e.g. force close, poor graphics?
A: Terrible navigation and user interface. Graphics can be rough, as long as I can understand them, but flow of the game UI must be good to keep my interest. There are a number of games I really want to play but the user interface annoys me so badly I stop pretty quickly.

4. Do you read the instructions on how to play or just Wing it?
A: Instructions are fine, but optional in-game tutorials and tips are welcome.

5. When would you pay for a game? (Other than mobile versions of best selling PC/PSP etc games).
A: To remove ads, get cloud sync & backup (for restoring to another device! see Majesty as a perfect example!), and if possible trim the permissions an app wants from me.

6. Do you play games where multiplayer involves passing the handset round?
A: Nope.

7. Do you prefer single player or multiplayer games?
A: Asynchronous multiplayer features are my favorite. Being able to play not-in-real-time is key for my lifestyle. I do like single player, though.

8. Where do you download most of your games i.e. Android market, Amazon, GetJar?
A: Android Market exclusively.

9. Do you like games where you can upload your scores to Facebook or other websites?
A: I don't use those features.

10. Do you recommend games you like to friends?
A: Yes.

Utterly Unsolicited Comments:
I just want to say that the cloud sync/backup from Majesty is a great example, the gold standard of how games should work. I also play Life Is Crime, so that is another cloud-sync'd game that means no matter what happens to my handset, I can keep playing later when I get a new one, and my accomplishments aren't lost.

I was addicted to My Country for a while and if *they* got cloud sync and backup, yeah, I'd be in deep trouble and addicted to that.

Might want to consider making a survey for this so that you don't have to read each and every reply...just a thought.

1. Yes...but usually I just try to find SOMETHING new, rather than something GOOD.

2. I search...but again, I usually just want something to keep me entertained for a few days.

3. Force Close

4. Both. I lean towards winging it though...most games are pretty intuitive though.

5. I would pay for a game if it's going to be continually worked on and improved (DLC and bug fixes...etc)

6. No, I hate people touching my phone.

7. Both

8. Android Market

9. No, but high scores among a list of in-game friends is always nice.

10. Yes
