Black Screen but phone boots up. Software issue?

My screen isn't only black but the (fast)boot menu won't even appear. I purchased a MHL - HDMI box and that shows a black screen on my TV as well. Is there anyways to do a hard reset externally on the EVO 4g LTE? Is there a program than can force a stable software package into the phone? I really believe this is a software issue.
