Blackberry To Evo

I agree! My BlackBerrys would push my Hotmail Emails to my phone in about 20-30 minutes; whereas my EVO would do it within 2 to 3 minutes, sometimes 4 or 5, sometimes even 1 minute. How inconsistent and unreliable! At least with the BBs Emails take consistently longer and are therefore more reliable.

wha!!! longer is the new reliable????
I have no problems with emails, exchange is instant, gmail is also, and i have my hotmail linked to my gmail account. Since its not my primary email account anyways, its fine with me not getting it instantly.

BBM - If you used it actively on your BB, there is just nothing like it. It's hard to explain to those that weren't heavily into it, but those that were know what I'm talking about...
.

If I could take BBM with me to every phone I will ever have from here on out I soooooo would! :(

Besides email (which I use heavily on my BB now and the idea of hangups in this area when I move to EVO in the next few days is realllllly eating at me), I was a BBM addict. I'm not much of a talker on my phone...I'm a heavy texter, but even heavier BBMer...I average about 3000 texts a month, and if there was a way to track BBM messaging it would probably be 3x that! Maybe more. The fact that it's always up and running without me having to log in...The group chat, complete with calendar, lists, updates, pictures is verrrrry useful for me and for the gospel group I'm in...we can keep track of rehearsals, engagements, etc and be sure that EVERYONE has the correct information...The picture, video, link, and voice notes sharing that doesn't require leaving the app to go to an online interface or to MMS (like gtalk on my blackberry)...instantly seeing whether or not your message was delivered and/or read...creating categories for your contacts so you can find them quickly...status and avatar pics...broadcast messages or multiperson chats....((sigh)) oh BBM oh BBM how lovely are your features...lol

But it's funny, in the last month, I lost an average of 2 maybe 3 BBM contacts PER WEEK who moved to an android device. That tells you something, ya know?

So, I'm looking forward to trying something different...and who knows, maybe there'll be an instant messenger out there in the (hopefully) near future that will ease my BBM withdrawal.

The only BB I had was the 8330 on Boost Mobile. The damn trackball poped out and i did not fell like spending $5.00 on a new one for a phone that was slow (96MB of ram) so when I was in the Best Buy mobile store, I had the rep check to see if I would qulfly for an EVO. I did. So I ditched the BB for an EVO and had my boost number ported over. I placed the old BB in that little plastic bag that comes with new phones and tossed it in the mailbox for recycling.

I don't text much to others, but I do get some texts. most of my texts are texts from facebook when people respond to my status updates etc. I sometimes text a responce back rather go in the facebook app. Sad part is, I can only send 160 characters or less, so at times I send multiple messages, and they don't always get posted in order.

I agree with what most are saying, and I personally don't think I could EVER go back to my Tour... but at the same time, I am NOT out shouting from the rooftops for everyone with a BB (especially entrenched users) to convert for a few reasons...

Battery - It's been mentioned, but it's really hard to describe to those that aren't coming from BB's. I could go DAYS with normal use on my BB, not so with the EVO. I've compensated by having charges all over the place, and even keep one in the glovebox in case i'm somewhere out of the norm for an extended period. It helps that everything that I am doing on the EVO just is so much a better experience to make me think it's worth the hassle...

Keyboard - Don't be fooled. There is a difference between a physical keyboard and a touch one, no matter how good it is (and the EVO's can be great with it's size). I think (with Swype) I'm back up to something of the same speed, but it was a tough few weeks for a while. I still don't crank out emails as much, instead waiting until I get to my desk.

Non-Ggmail Email - I use an old hotmail account (don't judge me :o) and although the actual push wasn't working when I left my BB, it was superior to the regular 30 min interval pull that I get on my evo, which is necessary to save battery life. I am not that heavy an email user so it doesn't matter much to me, but it's noticeable, probably more-so if you were a heavy user.

BBM - If you used it actively on your BB, there is just nothing like it. It's hard to explain to those that weren't heavily into it, but those that were know what I'm talking about...

Combined Message Box - This was one that I got over pretty quickly, but wouldn't mind having back. It was nice to just have one 'bucket' for everything that I needed to attend to. The notification area does a pretty good job of creating a quasi-one-stop-shop though.

Notification LED - The evo has one, but it's a pale comparison to the sheer visibility and flexibility of the BB's

Random Little Irritants - Every once in a while I do something on my evo and it just sorta smacks me that it's using a relatively young platform. Nothing major, but some things that mar an otherwise perfect experience. Great example... I just got off the phone with a friend, who when they called had their pixelated photo show up on my caller ID, even though I have added a high def one (syncing causes this). In the middle of the call, I ignored another call who turned out to be my brother, but for some reason, it doesn't give me caller/contact info when somebody tries to click in... I called him back, which in addition to the pixelated picture gives his GTALK status from a week ago, which has changed since then, but for some reason not updated... None of these are game changers, but just little things that make you go hmmm as you see them crop up.

Now before I must don the flamesuit to protect me from Android's most zealous defenders, most of these items can/are addressed with 3rd party apps and/or workarounds/patches/prayers. I LOVE my phone and it's system... Heck, the fact I get email looking the way it's supposed to (HTML) is worth it's delay in arrival. I've done things on my rooted EVO that I wouldn't have even dreamed of on my BB. But with that said, there are definitely some things I miss about my old tour... Not enough to go back, just fond memories Hope it helps.

I just got my EVO yesterday and I agree with everything said here. There are things I miss about my Tour, but given the choice the EVO wins hands down.

Im a former blackberry user.
Not having a keyboard compared to the problems you deal with using a blackberry, you will be thankful you switched just give it a few weeks to get use too

I came from Blackberry to Android almost a year ago with the Hero, now own EVO since launch. I thought I would miss my BB and did for about two days. It took me about a month to get used to not having physical keys, now I never want them again.

Over the last couple days I had to use my old BB 8330 due to a problem with my Evo screen. Under warranty I had to get a replacement. ANYWAYS I had to use my BB for a day and a half and absolutely hated every second of using it now, and I used to swear by BB, even getting most people I know to use them at the time. Using the keyboard was a pain. The phone was so slow it was not even worth using the web and other functions. I actually went and bought an Ipod Touch to use in place of the BB. I can never see myself using a BB.

I work at Sprint and I am surrounded by EVOs. I am finally going to break down and buy one this weekend. Anything I should know?
What I find amusing is that you work for Sprint and come here to ask questions about the EVO. lol.

Not making fun of you...but it is pretty funny. Maybe they need to train you folks up on the products they sell. Just a thought.

You will want to go through and follow all of the battery life recommendations. You will definitely not go days on a charge unless you get the extended battery. To me it looks huge, but people that have it say its not as big as it looks and they get days on a charge. I don't mind charging once a day. You will charge daily, even if you get great battery life.

You already mentioned forwarding your email to Gmail. If you don't mind doing that or outright switching to Gmail then I would dare say that the Evo is every bit as good at Gmail as BB is mail. I often get mail on my phone faster than my laptop or desktop. Gmail push is highly reliable and insanely fast, IMO you could only equal it's speed and reliability, you just can't get any faster.

BBIM I have no experience with, so you will have to listen the BB users on that.

Other than that, Evo leaves any BB phone in the dust. Apps, multimedia, screen quality, internet, you name it.
Umm...you do know that you can leave Gtalk...or any other IM service... running in the background on your EVO?

BBM is just something that BB users used to have over everyone else. I find it amusing when I ask a BB user why they dont try a different phone and the only thing they can say is "BBM". :-/

i just switched over from BB too....acually i bought the BOLD retail about 3 months ago and now just bought the EVO retail....OOPSS.....should have thought about that 3 months ago LOL....lovin the EVO....love the BB, but its a very old platform on top of a new one....if that even makes sense....cant believe i used to knock on android back in the day, even when i neva even tried it.....ohh well......its a great choice

What does working for Sprint have to do with garnering opinions on phones?

I work for EMC, but I don't know anything about data storage. I do know quite a bit about my job and network management though. However, shouldn't everyone assume I would know everything under the sun about SAN storage by the virtue of where I am employed?

Just because someone works for Sprint, should we assume they know about Code Division Multiplexing as well? How about how EVDO rev A deployments versus rev B deployments? You obviously think they should know everything about every phone that Sprint carries, why not every bit of technical wizardry required to make the phones work as well?

/shrug. Seems to make sense to me that to garner opinions on a device, one goes to the user community to get feedback.
