Im a soon to be ex-blackberry user and newbie to android. What are the things i should do first (apps to download, etc) to make the transition as smooth as possible?

Everything is better, faster smoother, more stable, more fun and any other positive adjective you can think of...but it's also different, so be prepared for different. There is a definite learning curve, but I could never go back to bb.

2 apps I highly recommend are LauncherPro for a better and faster UI and JuiceDefender for 24 hours + of battery life (at least for me and my phone).

I don't use or know anything about Facebook, but I've heard there are better 3rd party apps than the one it comes with. As far as gmail, I get notification of email all the time, I would guess like every other smart phone.

Gmail will work like you expect coming from a blackberry right out of the box; for non-gmail accounts I'd recommend a market solution over the stock email client (I like maildroid, some also like k9). The official Facebook app from the market just got updated, and in many ways is a lot better than the BB one, but the notifications from it are sometimes iffy (although you can always check it, and there are some places to get widgets that will alert you to activity as well).

i was a barry user for 6 years this is my first android phone and it's fantastic but the learning curve is more than you may anticipate

There are a ton of how-to's and tips and tricks on this site. Start reading now. I've been at it for two days and haven't even scratched the surface. There is one that links to a site (Verizon maybe) that has video tutorials of how to do most of the things you'll need. Very cool. Read a lot, search for previous posts and if you haven't found the answers - post a question. These guys are very quick to respond.

And now... we hurry up and wait (on our phones, that is). LOL!

Same here...BB to Droid X in a few weeks if not days. I'll be checking this thread out for some ideas.

Me as well. Hopefully it will get here sooner rather than later. I am getting more excited and hating my BB more and more each day, lol.

One thing I'm not looking forward to losing is keyboard shortcuts. Another thing is Viigo, which i use probably more than any other app and it doesn't look like there is an android version. If anyone has any recommendations for a Viigo-like app, please share.

That is the one thing I will miss as well. There appear to be a couple of rss readers but Viigo is the best one and it isn't available - at least not yet - on Android.

I don't hate my Storm 2, but I do have a bad case of "new toy-itis". LOL!

This is very true. I got my Droid and took it to work not knowing that they come with nothing. No notepad, no security, no nothing. LOL, It was a fun day.

:D

Well, the Droid X has a notepad and several other stock apps and widgets, even if I generally recommend market versions in many (but not all) cases. Remember that the Droid was very, very vanilla Android from a much earlier version.

Still, it's true, there learning curve is longer on Android then on BB5 (obviously I haven't used BB6), but IMO it's a similar step up as it is going from an iPhone to a BB...and with an even greater increase in power and flexibility.

I absolutely hated my Storm. Biggest POS I've ever owned.

BUT, moving to the DX took some getting used to. The push email on the BB is really nice. I still have trouble getting consistent notifications of new email in my GMail account.

Tip... if you have non-Gmail accounts, you can setup Gmail to access them via POP, so that should solve a bunch of problems for you.

Android will seem very weird to you at first. But remember, it's a real OS, not software attempting to be a phone and a PDA. BBOS is just a freakin' joke through and through. Stick with it for a few days, and it won't be long before you love it.

Well learning curve isn't that bad and well worth it .Anything you can't find out /you can ask here and someone will know , :p more likely a bunch will know . A former bb user as well ,lol this place is slamed with bb users I found :D

I'm also coming from a black berry and I didn't find it difficult to learn at all. I thought I might....but it could be because I've been hanging around the forums for months before getting my x :)
