Bloatware On The S23

I actually use the Samsung apps over the Google apps with the exception of Google Messages. So even though I understand what the article is alluding to, I don't personally consider those apps bloat.

I do delete or disable things like Facebook, Spotify & Netflix. I don't really participate in social media, nor do I stream music or videos. However, if I did, they wouldn't be bloat either. Bloatware will always be subjective to the individual. (IMO)

Those are my thoughts exactly. Likewise, I use the Samsung apps, rather than the Google apps other than Messages. I also use both Netflix and Spotify. I love Samsung's calendar and email apps in particular. I also love Samsung's clock app. In addition to being my alarm clock it's also the timer when I'm cooking.

Messages is the duplicate app I find most confusing...I get them wanting to push people to their ecosystem, but why make their own Messages app when they worked with Google to create a bespoke version of the Google messages app that fits OneUI (and is actually very nice). It makes absolutely no sense to me.

I agree with you. My guess is that their own Messages app will be deprecated at some point like their music player app.

I also prefer to use Samsung apps over Google apps, including Samsung Messages. I don't do social media, but it doesn't bother me that the apps are on my phone. Bloat is in the eye of the beholder. Much ado about nothing.

I'm the same way. I tend to use the Samsung Apps that are included over the Google versions. I don't even use Chrome. Same as you, Messages is the only one I really use regularly.

I disable everything else I don't need (no social media apps) and uninstall what I can and I am good there. If I REALLY NEEDED the space, then I would worry bout de-bloating, but with 512GB total, I think I am okay with just disabling it.

Question is: would you notice the difference if you didn't know?

Great question. On my 512GB Z Fold 3, System is 62GB and I would not have known, or cared, if it was never mentioned. Now, if I was running out of space and could not remove anything, THEN it would matter, but for almost everyone else, I really doubt it would really matter until someone talks about it and makes a big deal of it.

The Power-Users and Tinkers that want to get the most out of their devices, they are an edge-case and are NOT the norm (no insult intended, just the way it is) and are a very small percentage of the user base.

I don't notice because I have the 512 GB model. Mine has plenty of room, which is fine. In the past I had a 128 GB S10+, which wouldn't have been enough without the SD card. However, I don't miss SD cards at all now that I have larger internal storage.

Would setting the New S23 up from scratch save room and eliminate bloatware? Or, is it best to use Samsung Switch and select apps? Thanks!

It makes no difference.

Some people say it's more stable if you set up from scratch, but Sammy's bloat will be there either way. And I'm not convinced on stability... I don't remember the last phone I set up from scratch... my OnePlus 2, maybe?
