Blocking Internet Sites

Soooo, my son (13) has decided to access porno sites via his DInc's internet after we locked acccess to these same sites on his laptop. Part of me wants to give him a high five, but the mother in me wants to completely block his access. Is there a way to prevent access to certain internet sites via the DInc's Internet Settings?

I spent some time looking into this one.

The Android browser only filters content via a hosts file. You could, in theory, filter out any website you like by pointing it to 127.0.0.1 in the hosts file, but thats a whole lot of typing (there's a whole lot of porn out there), and you have to be rooted to edit it to start with.

It's possible that a third party browser can do what you need, but I couldn't find one. And even then, you would have to find a way to keep your son from using the default browser.

Unfortunately, theres no easy solution for this one that I can see. As mentioned, see what Verizon has to say about it.

There was a post a while back from a guy who's work had VZW lock down their browser on their end and was trying to get around it. Not sure if it's a business only feature but it sounded like VZW could put up "net nanny" like features – It’s worth a call to find out.

You could try Android Parental Control. It's an all-or-none approach, but it would definitely keep him out of the porn sites. There's also Mobile Security, which is an overall security service with parental controls. It costs $4/year, so I don't know how good the filters would be.

You could also try blocking access through your wifi router. It would require blocking the mobile network somehow (with that first app, for example), and obviously it wouldn't have any effect when he's out of the house, meaning all other access would have to be cut off, but if that's not too draconian for the situation it's worth a shot. Cisco and Netgear both have parental controls in their routers, though Cisco's are very rudimentary and require blocking every site one by one, which is obviously problematic. I'm betting there's a service that does this kind of thing, though.

Go on to you Verizon account web page and set the content filter. There is 3 or 4 settings to choose from.

A DNS is basically a phone book for the internet as explained below.

An often-used analogy to explain the Domain Name System is that it serves as the phone book for the Internet by translating human-friendly computer hostnames into IP addresses. For example, the domain name IANA — Example domains translates to the addresses 192.0.32.10 (IPv4) and 2620:0:2d0:200::10 (IPv6).

From what I understand is that every ISP has a DNS server of some kind.

Now when you use open DNS, what your doing is your telling your wireless router to not get the information from your IPS DNS but you use Open DNS.

Using Open DNS allows you to block sites such as porn. The great thing about open DNS is that from what I understand their is no software involved. Meaning your kid(s) can't get around this unless s/he know's how to get into the settings of the router. If you password protect the settings in your router you don't have to worry about that.

What's neat about this, is that EVERY computer, phone, tablet, gaming consoles, Nintendo DS, EVERY THING goes through this filter that you placed in your wireless router using Open DNS.

Meaning the only way hes going to get his porn is if he goes to a friends house or some thing.

Also turn on WPA2 on the wireless portion so it encrypts your wireless and doesn't allow other people on.

Now, we are not done.

He still has 3g on his phone so that means hes going to be bypassing the wifi filter. So like others have said your going to have to go through Verizon and get it blocked on 3g.

Your good to go.

I'm a tech kind of guy and have heard good things about open DNS, but to be completely honest I haven't set this up. So the only thing I've heard is that it's controlled via the router.

I don't see any problem with him looking at porn so long as hes not obsessed with it. Sounds normal for a teenage boy to look at porn, would you rather him being sexing up some girl instead?

I'm not sure if it works, but I just downloaded TrendMicro's Mobile Security. It claims to have parental controls for web browsing. Another issue would be if he is using any type of RSS program. Not sure if any product covers them.

I use TrendMicro on my computer and noticed the mobile product is available. I've been loathe to get a product like this for fear of it slowing my phone. But, given the risks out there, it seemed a prudent step.
