Blocking mode question related to sleep option

It's after 6 a.m. here and my notifications are silent. I have the "sleep" option turned on in blocking mode, but have no idea how the watch determines the sleep period which is what seems to be muting my notifications during the day. I had to uncheck that option to get notifications sounds.
