Blog Following Breaking In (and root/ROMing) OG Droid

thanks zombie! I followed your steps and was finally able to root my droid! Its like a new phone again!

Credit for instructions definitely goes to MotoCache1 @ Droidforums.net, he really made everything quite painless and detailed! I for one like to have some understanding of what's happening behind the scenes when I'm going to do something as complicated as rooting an OS, something MotoCache1 did to the 9's.

The Fed, have you chosen a custom ROM yet?

Yes! Project Elite. It's awesome. So far so good. I'll be hooking up my wife with the same ROM this weekend.

And thanks to MotoCache1 @ Droidforums.net!!!

Zombie,

I have noticed that when I access my gallery (pics, media) that my phone acts a little weird or lags for awhile afterwards. Is this a common problem with this ROM? Thanks again for the help.

I think thats just a problem if you have a lot of pictures saved because I have over 500 and it does that sometimes to me too and I'm on CM7 OC'd to 1GHz

I haven't tried Project Elite, but I would question if it was an issue with the amount of memory the OG Droid has. I've had success speeding up CM7 by activating the "Lock home in memory" option (Settings -> CyanogenMod Settings -> Performance) , though this is obviously at the expense of the total amount of memory available. Check to see if there are settings for disabling cosmetic improvements in the OS specific to your launcher/ROM?

Also look into overclocking, I'm set at a maximum of 800 MHz right now and it seems stable to me, with no real noticeable decrease in battery life. The way I did this is fairly unsophisticated (settings in CM7), and I'm sure you can attain better results by loading a custom kernel (low voltage, ultra low voltage, higher clock speeds).

Lastly it may have to do with your SD card, is it fairly old? If it is, it might have a slower access time and slow down your applications. Also the number of pictures can have a big impact.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the replies and the advice. I have the min/max set at 245/800 on demand and that seemed to fix the above problem. I haven't messed with any of the advanced settings. I wish there was a tutorial for PE! Thanks again for all the help. You guys rock and this site is the KING!! :D

You'll get the hang of things just experiment. Just remember if you have a back up you can restore if you mess something up. So don't be afraid to play around!

Running very stable for several days now on CM7 with ChevyNo1's 1.1 GHz LV kernel. I think I found where I'm going to stay for awhile. I tried to do without gingerbread, but I just don't have it in me. It's too beautiful/useful!

I'll agree.....I just rooted and ROM'd to Project Elite 6.5 and the default kernel and the OG Droid is like new again. I was lazy did the SuperOneClick method though. Sooner are later I'll start trying the different included kernels!:D
