Bluetooth File Transfer

Hey guys I have a little question for you. Buddy here at work has a DX and wants to do BT file transfer from his phone to his PC or vice versa. The computer is running windows 7 with a dell embedded Bluetooth adapter. He can pair with the laptop but he can't connect, they can see each other but he can't actually make a file transfer work. I went through the same steps he has on my DInc to connect to the exact same laptop and it works flawlessly. Only other option that I have been able to find on the DInc and not the DX is under the Bluetooth menu there is an advanced settings menu for Bluetooth FTP, which is exactly what I'm trying to do. I can't seem to find that anywhere on the DX and we are both running 2.2

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

That's a lot of work ... you could just plug in a USB cord, shift the X to Mass Storage Mode and handle the X as if it were a flash drive plugged into your computer. You can edit, create folders, move files ... all drag/drop style.

Warning: Do NOT install that awful Moto desktop app that always appears when you plug in the X to a computer via USB. Just hit cancel every time there's a message about the program install. It's totally unnecessary and only makes things NOT work. If you have already uninstalled it, UN-install it.

yea we're aware of the mass storage mode, I personally chose to do this over the BT based on speed alone and I have 6 micro usb cords around my house. Has to be an issue with the DX or a setting somewhere on the phone I can't find. Do you think my DInc can do it cuz its rooted? Would that make a difference?

Jeepzor, I had a similar issue where I could only transfer from my phone to PC, but not vice-versa for some reason. Just go to the market and download the app called Bluetooth File Transfer (the one by MidievalSoftware). This solved my problem. So you might want to give that a try. Good luck!

I second LMO. use the widget to turn on OPP and FTP quickly. thats the issue is getting those to turn on

This is how you do this:
I am using win7x64, but this should work with vista too... Download the USB drivers for your USB Dongle and install on windows. After rebooting, you should be able to see the Bluetooth icon in your tray... Click on it and make sure that your settings (checkboxes) allow your PC to be discovered. Check all the boxes. Now attempt to connect and pair to your phone.
1) Manage Apps > Wireless > Bluetooth Setting > check Make Visible. Now you have 3 mins to connect so work quickly. Make sure that Bluetooth is turned on (on your phone...).
2) Click on the Bluetooth icon in your tray and click add device. Your device should then be discovered by your PC. An icon will appear and you can right click > Add Device. Hit Next and your device will be added to your Devices and Printers in the Control Panel. Once this is done you are good to go because for the Fascinate, no PINs or Passwords are necessary.

3) Now for the phone. I downloaded Bluetooth File Transfer from the Market. I did not need this app to receive a file. This was done simply by using my Bluetooth app on my PC to "Send File" ... I just had to select the device that I had added when it popped up and then accept the transfer on my phone when prompted. Easy enough
4) Sending files from the phone was a bit more difficult, because I had to learn how to use the application... Open the application. Make sure your Bluetooth is on and discoverable (on the phone...).
The phone will mount the SD card and the list of folders will be visible. If you want to transfer pictures then you can navigate to the DCIM folder and select which pictures you want by checking the boxes. Taps... not long push...
Now set your PC up to receive the files: hit the bluetooth icon and click 'Receive File' ; Windows is now waiting for your phone to initiate a send operation.
Once the file(s) are selected then hit the Menu Button on your phone > More > Send File(s) by Bluetooth.
That's it... The send operation progress will send the files to the root of your User directory or to the Documents folder or some other place where downloads are configured to go... for my computer it is admin\downloads\ but for some reason all the files ended up in the root of the Users\admin directory.

It took some playing, but I finally got it to work real easy.

At first I kept getting a message that the device that I was sending to did not have the FTP OBEX or OPP protocols available. Well apparently a little persistence paid off.

I had the opposite issue... I could only transfer from my PC to my phone at first. I used the Bluetooth File Transfer app and after a bit of fiddling I got it to work. It's a bit tedious. SEE MY POST in this thread below... Ken

Bluetooth has always been bugy; I often had to delete and re-pair my Thunderbolt to get it to stream music or transfer files. It was annoying but I have always been able to get it to work eventually.

Today however Windows 7 failed to install drivers when I attempted to re-pair. I know I have transfered files since my last Windows update and since my Thunderbolt was updated to Gingerbread. Yet for some reason Windows can't find drivers now. WTF!?!

I suspect what has happened is that my carrier (Verizon) pushed a software update which has changed the profile of my Thunderbolt so that it looks different to Windows 7 and thus the drivers that used to work, and probably still do, are not installed.

I bet manually installing the old drivers would fix this; it's either that or install new drivers. So if anyone has a Thunderbolt that can successfully connect to Win7 via bluetooth please note the drivers that are installed and post them in this thread.

Bluetooth is and always has been an Fn PITA!

Ok I found a soultion. As I suspected older drivers fix the issue.

Download the 'Windows Mobile Device Center' (Date Published: 8/20/2007)
Download: Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 for Windows Vista (32-bit) - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

Excecute drvupdate-x86.exe

Manually update or install drivers:
Manufacture - Microsoft Corporation
Model - Windows Mobile-based device support

Windows might complain that the drivers are not compatable... ignore it.

After hours of troubleshooting this is the only thing that fixed me.

Hope this helps!
