Blurry contact photos in stock messaging app

I've just gone back to the stock messaging app from Textra for better integration with the LED case.
But all my contact photos come up blurry, even though they are crystal clear in the contacts app. Is this just a problem with the stock app or is there a way to solve it? They were very clear in textra.

are your contacts being synced thru the cloud? aka Google? check Settings - Accounts - Google - Sync Contacts. If it's checked, you should be good to go. Photos will be blurry usually with sync issues. But if you check and uncheck that option it should fix the problem.
