Blurry pictures

I use the camera app spontaneously to snap a pic when my kids or dog is doing something so having to switch to pro made to change shutter speed or other settings just isnt going to work. I had the note 5 before this and that had a great camera where I never had these blur problems. my wife even switched from her iphone because she liked the samsung camera. I figured the note 8 would be an even better experience but so far it is a lot worse. if i can't figure this out I am taking this stupid phone back to the store.

A tripod isn't necessary, but what IS necessary is holding the phone very still when taking the picture. OIS can help, but can't eliminate "camera motion blur". It seems to do best with video.

Unfortunately, phones aren't designed for picture taking, and touching the screen to take the picture often results in pushing the camera forward while the picture is being taken.

Practice holding the phone steady when taking the picture will help with camera motion blur, but no with subject movement.

If I look at his pictures it seems the primary issue is subject motion blur. While holding the camera still is always good, it won't help the subject motion blur. There is a little bit of camera motion blur in the hand shot, but I suspect that is because he is shaking the other hand.

That said, another suggestion is to take pictures using the voice control function. Never use the volume key.

There is a pre launch update being pushed soon that is supposed to include camera improvement. Maybe this will help somewhat.

You may want to swap it out. Perhaps you have a faulty device if no one else is having this issue.

Have you tried sports mode on your kids or pet or anything moving outside? I tested it on my dogs running around the yard and it works, I then tried your "test of a moving hand right in front of it and it gets the same result under sports mode indoors where the light is low and get a blurry hand, there is not enough light indoors to up the shutter speed to stop moving action. I then tried pro mode outdoors where there is enough light for this teeny sensor and set the shutter speed to 1/350 and did the moving hand and it was sharp.

So if there is enough light in your setting the camera does work as it should

I actually took a photo this week of my daughter going down one of those big inflatable slides outside, and I was blown away at how crisp it is even as she's sliding down. I didn't use sports mode or anything, just the auto settings. The edges are a touch soft, but I think that's because the sun is right behind the edge of the slide and over exposing the image. IF I had stepped once to the side and blocked more of the sun halo, I think it would've been PERFECT. I am so happy with this camera.

Too bad you can't wait until I try it as I am unbiased and love to take photos and have trouble holding any cellphone steady for photos. I have recently sold my Keyone due to unhappiness with the camera primarily. I was thrilled with the photos I took on the Note 8 in the Best Buy store. My phone is due here tomorrow I am hoping.

N8 should have no problem taking better photos than the N5, it's a better camera sensor and wider aperture lens.

By any chance have you been zooming in when taking photos? No one else has mentioned this yet, but when you zoom it switches to the 2nd camera which has a different sensor and smaller aperture, which would result in a longer shutter speed and more blur. If you aren't zooming than you can ignore this.

Also possible something is wrong with the camera, even with good quality control the occasional faulty component can make it into production and sold.

The camera on the Note 8 is more than fine. The issue is motion, and how to correctly handle it. OIS only helps in lower-light situations with low shutter speeds when taking photos of STILL subjects. It does nothing to help with things in motion. To freeze motion, you have to shoot with a higher shutter speed, and to reliably shoot with a higher shutter speed, you need decent light. The OP should have shot in Pro mode, with shutter set to 1/250 (or more), depending on the speed of the motion being captured. It works like a charm, and is the same technique you would use on a DSLR.

I don't think the zoom (2X) is a failure by any means. But it will have some limitations compared to the 1X lens for one simple reason: physics.

- A 2x zoom lens will have twice as much motion blur (everything else held equal). That is inevitable and true of any camera on the planet.
- The 2x lens must have a smaller aperture because of physics, so it lets in less light, requiring a longer shutter speed and/or higher sensitivity (ISO), which result in lower picture quality. Any lens with a longer focal length will require a smaller aperture unless you are willing to have a larger protruding lens.

No engineering can overcome these basic tradeoffs.

I must say though I am pretty happy with the quality of zoomed in pictures and camera in general. I took a bunch of pictures at my daughter's soccer game last weekend and was VERY impressed with the results. I am also impressed that even the standard lens retains much more detail, especially in low light than did my Galaxy S8+.

and I'm not happy with them and have never been. because of the poor quality I don't zoom the camera, I zoom with my body.
