Boom speakers, not so much

I know all the prerelease reviews said the speakers were slightly quieter but clearer. However, I find the speakers very quieter. Notifications are sometimes missed and navigation is almost useless.

Anyone else disappointed?

My only reason why this could be possible is a faulty unit. I have my M8/M9 side by side and the difference is barely noticeable - Adam

Well I did an informal test with a display unit and compared it to my One Max. It is definitely quieter, but the sound quality seems more dynamic and covers a wider frequency range with regards to being able to discern audibly. It also sounded quieter than the Desire Eye and the M8. It honestly reminds me of how the M7 sounded quieter (but sounded better) with Beats Audio processing enabled. I'd like to see someone compare each implementation of BoomSound (M7 vs M8 vs M9) using measured data or a visual graph.

Most likely has to do with the Dolby settings similar to the way Boom Sound effected the sound quality.

Good point. The M7 was the last in the M series where you could turn the boomsound off. It is noticeably louder with it off but the sound isn't as good. After awhile I just left BoomSound (Beats) on even though it was quieter because I prefered the sound quality. The M8 is louder than the M7 with boomsound off but much more clarity and detail. I assume the M9 is somewhere in between.

Its a very noticable difference between the two. Not all that bothered because the speakers are still louder than anything else on the market. The sad thing is that some will swear that the M9 is louder or the same as the M8 knowing deep down that they are lying.

You can turn it off. Also it recognizes when your listening to music or watching a video movie

Those modes only work on wired headsets not bluetooth headphones so keep that in mind.

I love the clarity of the speakers but I wish they could be louder. Is this possible through a software update or change?

Can't give up my M8 now. I would rather have a phone I have to always turn down, rather than it not being loud enough.

There is literally a 2 decibel difference in favour of the M8. 72 vs 74. Noticeable but not by much.

Well I finally had a chance to compare my M9 to my Nexus 9 and One Max. In absolute loudness the One Max is the clear winner. However, when it comes to sound quality, the M9 wins hands down. It's not even close compared to the others. The M9 strikes the perfect balance between quality, clarity, and loudness. The Nexus 9 sounds horrible compared to the others. As for notifications, I have no problem hearing them, in addition to speaker phone activated phone calls.

Too bad you don't have a Nexus 6. That would have been a better comparison and I hear the difference isn't as much.
